Message: Alright guys , it's time for me to get some help !
I've been going crazy over this stalling problem on my Dak.
First off , it's a 1997 sport , 5.2 V8 , auto , 4x4. One owner (my dad's now mine)
The truck was showing typical "fuel pump dying" symptoms . It would stall every once in a while , but start right back up.
It got to be that the stalling would become more frequent . Typical day , I start it up (about 60F here in sunny New Mexico) and get on my way after about 1 min of warm up. I drive for about 10 min and get to a red light , pulling out of the stop it will just cut out. I have all dash lights and gages working properly .
The first stall of the day it's about 2 - 3min before it will start again . I turn the ignition on and hear the fuel pump prime , and 2 relays click on and off (ASD and FP ?) normally it takes a few tries before it starts back up . Two blocks later and it dies again , just cuts out sharply (no "running out of gas" symptoms.)
I thought it was fuel pump so I've pulled the line a few times to find that there is pressure .
About 2 - 3x this happens and then the truck will run fine till the next time it's let to sit for a while .
From there I thought to check the ASD relay , that is working correctly . I check for power on the green/ orange wire and have it . When the truck stalls out and isn't starting I've checked for signal at the coil . I usually do not have power there .
I hooked up a meter to the green/orange wire (at the under hood fuse block connector) and the other lead to batt ground. I've driven around like this and I see good voltage until it wants to stall , the meter drops to 0vdc. The truck won't start while there is 0v . After cycling the ignition a few times I'll get voltage and the truck fires right up .
I've went as far as jumping a wire right to the connector from the batt positive post . I STILL get the stalling !
So , I'm lost . I've replaced the pick up in the dist. the ASD relay , added 12v right to the circuit and I'm still having problems !
Anyone have a clue ?
I'm a low - voltage tech , and college educated in electronics , but this one is really screwy !
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE let me know if you have any problems like this in the past ! I need some help ASAP !
Thank you one and all , hopefully I can get my baby (and my means of employment) back ! I NEED this truck to make a living and it's really killing me now getting stuck on the side of the road when I have a service call to get to !
If I'm missing any details just ask . I really need the help guys . I've been browsing this board for the last 3 - 4 years and this is the first time I need help ! All other questions I've ever had have been answered with out even asking !

Message: You may want to check the crank position sensor. It could be breaking down. My old work truck would do that and my shopforeman and I spent 2 days tracing it. On a hunch he swaped it out and it ran fine after that.

Message: No codes , the only thing that comes up when I check (holding the trip button in when turning the truck on) is a 950 (abs related) and a 999 (end of codes , right ?)

Message: First I would check my battery and connections. When you say the problem occurs after it has sat for awhile may be a clue. But you say it stalls while driving. Does it do it at a stop light or just driving down the street? Mine stalled first thingin the morning and at a stop sign unless I kept my foot on the gas. When I got a new battery it all disappeared. Exact same thing happened to my Durango a month later, and the cure again was a new battery.

Message: do the '97's have the infamous splice #115? the one a few inches below the PDC. it sounds like that could be the problem.

Message: I was thinking the same thing on the splice !
It seems to be showing the same symptoms as described for that problems as well .
I did pick up a new crank sensor but have yet to install it . I'll let everyone know if the problem is fixed .
Thanks for all the help so far . Hopefully this gets fixed soon.
