 Subject: O2 sensor test

My dad has a Check engine light, truck is running rich. He didn't go through the codes yet but can someone tell me how to test the O2 sensors? He has two, both on the Drivers side. 4.7 V8 1999 (I think)
Where the heck are the connectors for the Sensors, It's tight in there?

4.7 came out in 2000 in Jeep, not Dodge. Dodge was later.
Guess again.

The 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee came with the optional 4.7L engine - its first appearance.
The 2000 Dakota had the 4.7L as an option. The 5.2L engine was dropped.
The 2000 Durango 4x4 had the 4.7L engine standard. This was the only configuration to get this engine. The 5.2L engine was still standard in 4x2 configurations - its last year.

Tony,
I would check the codes first. If you don't have a code reader, try this:
Without starting the engine, turn the key to the ON position, then OFF, then ON again, then OFF, then ON. Leave it there and look at the odometer. If any codes are stored in the PCM, they will be displayed there. At the end of the code listing, or if there are no codes (unlikely, since the Check Engine light is coming on), you will get the message "Pdone".
If the code(s) indicate bad O2 sensor(s), replace the offending sensor(s). Yes, it's awfully tight in there, but you can do it. Sometimes it's easier to reach the connectors from up above, other times you get them from down below. Borrow the O2 sensor tool kit from Autozone or whomever, it makes the job go a lot easier.
