Subject: need new head??

Message:
Okay, a few years ago I had broke a sparkplug off in the head. Getting that out was fun..anyway, I'm thinkin that the threads are pretty screwed up from that situation and it's causing a leak around the plug, obviously not good. The reason I think this because I remember the last time I changed plugs it was hard to screw the plug in past a certain point, and I've been getting a cylinder misfire code for the cylinder ocassionaly.

So, my real question is..
Can I just retap the head and put in helicoils??
OR should I just go get another head?

thanks but what way is the best way to fix it? If i'm gonna drill it out and retap it i'm gonna have to take the head off anyway since all the shavings will end up on top of my piston right?

Boomer,

You can put a helicoil in it. Most shops can do it, or instruct hyou how to do it. If that's the only problem, you don't need a new head.

An attachment on a vacuum should take care of cylinder debris.

Godd luck

haha, thats funny, but I have done helicoils before, put em in the steering knuckle for the front brake calipers, not hard at all. I'm gonna go out and double check and really see if thats the problem, thanks for the advice either way.

i just heard another idea..you can use jb weld to fill in the threads, redrill and rethread to original. this guy said he does stuff like that all the time on big diesel engines and uses it to stop head gasket leaks and it withstands the temps. jb weld says it's only good up to 500 degrees but i think it's worth a shot.

jb weld in that spot is very half-azz. do it properly. run a helicoil in it.

that does sound like a better idea, but would it leak compression since the helicoil isn't solid with the head?

You may get away with just running a 14mm spark plug tap (available at industrial supply stores) in the head. If you bring the piston to TDC and have someone hold a vacuum cleaner hose as close as possible to the tap it may work. Good luck.

if you coat that tap good with some bearing grease it should hold most of the debris in the grease.

I had an outboard with that type of repair, the compression was fine.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way

right but I'm still gonna have to drill it out and that's still gonna cause metal chips to fall into the cylinder.

Well, just changed the plugs and turns out the threads are fine! I'm an idiot, the heat shield around the plug was rubbing on the spark plug socket making it hard to turn, everything is good now!
