Subject: Rear Axle width 1st gen IP: Logged
Message: I'm looking for a replacement rear end for my 1950 New Yorker (before the purists start groaning, I bought it less engine and transmission).
The stock New Yorker rear is 58" axle flange to axle flange. Whats the width on the first generation, slab sided Dakota? I've seen the second gen, pontoon fendered Dakota listed at 59 or 60". Do all the early Dakotas have 9.25" ring and pinion like the second gen, or is it just the V-8's. Is the bolt pattern on the first gen 5x4.5" and do they have drums or disks's. Thanks

Message: The 87-96 Dakota had either the 7.25" rear or the 8.25" rear, both with drums. The 9.25" rear wasn't available until after 97.
The 87-90 had a 5x4.5" bolt pattern and the 91-04 had a 6x4.5" pattern.
