I own a 98 dak 3.9 with 100,000 miles. Recently I have noticed some excessive play in the steering wheel. I can move the wheel a couple inches either way with no effect on steering. Also when backing up & the wheels turned full either way i can feel a slight bump form the front end. I'm thinking wheel bearings. Am I on the right track? There is no wear on the tires.

despite your attitude, have you checked the joint between the steering shaft and the rack?

if thats not it it could be a short between the drivers seat and the steering wheel?

I had this same problem on my '97 once. This is what it might be:
There is this nut in between the floor of the truck and where the
steering wheel enters the back of the dash. That nut might be
loose. Other than that, I don't know. Usually, all these problems I
thought were huge on my truck actually turned out to be a simple
fix, like a turn of a wrench. =/

Took it in to shop today. U-joint steering shaft,$220. They also claim I need 3 ball joints & told me I have abusted shock.. Parts & labor close to $900.00. I'll do the shocks myself this Sat., but the rest is out of my league. Think I'll take it to another shop for 2nd opinion. Not too sure about those ball joints, so I'll have someone else look it over. I also have a tranny issue which I posted on in the v-6 board. Won't shift into o.d., & have a check engine light, po740. Not a good week for the 'ol Dakota.
