What would cause a metal grinding noise from your 1997 Dodge Dakota when driving slow or reverse slow and when going down the road it stops?

I don't have a '97, but I don't think that really matters. If we're talking about your truck, Ben, more info could help. Type of transmission, etc.

Yeah sorry that was vague. It seems to come from the transmission, 44re, and it only happens when its cold outside, or when I first start it after a while. Disappears after it warms up.

I'm worried its the Torque converter or bands in the tranny, I bought a stethescope, but I thought someone here might know what it is because I see the question around on the net alot when I google the problem but it always seems to go unanswered.
