 Subject: Guessing O2 or Fuel pressure reg.

Dads 2001 4.7 V8
Had Check Engine light go on, off, on over the past few months. It's on now and his gas mileage dropped and the exhaust is Sooty ( rich). He hasn't had any codes read yet but is there a common failure such as the O2 sensor or the Fuel Pressure Regulator??

tony, to read the codes just do this:
turn the key on/off/on/off/on(on not start) and the codes will display in the odometer(PXXXX). when its finished it will display Pdone. just a guess maybe O2 but read the codes first.

you can also take it to some auto parts stores and they will scan for free... i know advance and autozone both do.

THANKS FELLOWS. THE CLOSEST THING I HAVE NEAR ME IS "PEP BOYS " I'M GUESSING THEY WILL ALSO SCAN THE CODE FOR ME. THEY SEEM TO BE A LITTLE MORE SAVEY THAN WHAT I CALL "FUZZY DICE " STORES LIKE U.S.-ONE OR AUTO BARN. I KNOW THEY CARRY THE SENSORS..........

pepboys may not scan it for free, they do service as well as sell parts.
they carry some name brand parts, i picked up my monroe shocks there and various other parts. My distributor pick up in my old truck came from there, borg warner.
you can buy code readers for less than $50. scanners for $100+ depending on features.
