I have a 98 4x4 5.2 with a heat issue. If the truck is idling the heat is just barely warm, but on the highway or during acceleration the heat is great. I've changed the thermostat, even though the temp gauge read normal (Around 190). I also tried the backflushing of the heater core, though I didn't do it for the 5 min that the popular thread suggest. So I may try that again. But I could really use some help here. Oh, and the coolant is topped off.

Maybe the heater core needs to be flushed again, but I don't know about flushing it for 5 minutes, I did mine and I just flushed it one way until the water came out clean then back the other way until it was clean then one last time to make sure all the dirty water was out and mine has worked fine ever since, I don't remember timing it but I don't think it took me 5 minutes to do that, though it could have. Time flies when your having fun. Other than that, its posible that the water pump impellers are starting to wear out, I doubt that is happening, but I have seen it before.
If it just idles does it cool down really fast, or take a while, or if you cold start and let it idle not get any heat until you rev it up?
Good Luck

I'm not to sure on the 5 min either, but I'm gonna flush it again tomorrow. Now that I think about it, I just had a new water pump put in about a year ago. So I also doubt its that. When I start the truck in the morning, the heat is cold, regardless of how long the engine warms up. It only gets hot when I push on the gas. If I release the gas (like at a stop sign or light) the heat immediately returns to barely luke warm. Apprieciate your help!
