Subject: Home brew intake question IP: Logged
Message: I have been looking for a cold air intake for my 1990 V6 dakota. Have had no luck. So I thought maybe a K&N cold air kit for the 92+ would work. Any comments are appreciated.
Aboutht e home brew system. I thought about getting some 3in dia PVC pipe. putting an elbow in the middle of it. And painting it with heat resistant paint. My question is about hooking it to the stock air box. Could I buy a simple rubber fitting and attach the PVC to the r. fitting and to the airbox? Of course take out the stock filter. Would this allow my enginge to get the cooler air from the front of the engine comp. and run it throught the TBI? Any help is good. Thanks for your time.

Joe,
I have a 99 Dak 5.2, what I did was put a 3" exhaust pipe at roughly a 45 off the stock intake hose and dropped a matrix double conned filter off the end, this is not truly cold air or ram but you will notice the difference big time. If you use PVC it will be the same difference as exhaust pipe because it has smooth insides for maxium flow and least resistance. Just be sure and keep the PVC as far away from your block as possible. I dont know about the V-6 but modifying my intake did not pose a threat for my mass-air flow sensor.

Message: Thanks Joshua. I am alittle worried about the PVC. I live in Fla where the temp. is very hot. Most of the time, upper 80s and mid 90's. I am trying to figure out if I could wrap some heat resistant tape or paint around the PVC. Maybe that would work. I dont know. I will look into it more this weekend. Thanks for the info though. Have a nice day.

Joe,
You probably already know but if the PVC is kept away from the block, the temps that you described are not in danger of melting or warping the PVC for intake purposes if and only if it is kept at least 10"-1 ft away from the block, you can wire tie it to the stock box enclosure for securing it but you dont want it to be bouncing around especially if you have a 4x4.
Like I said I am not familiar with your year model but if all possible look for a place behind your grill that you can but the filter of choice up to to have a ram air effect, if not you will still see the difference but not as dramatic.

Josh

Message: Thanks Joshua, I appreciate your info. on this intake. I will look into this more this weekend. But you fell, the PVC will be ok? I am also trying to get my hood scoop hooked up and possibly can get some hot air out from under the hood. Thanks for the help.

Message: PVC Will be ok to use ..... you have to heat it up to about 400 for it to melt.... just make sure you buy "HARD" SCH 40 pipe not "CELL-CORE" SCH 40.
Also to connect to the stock airhat and the filter you should buy 3" "NO-HUB" NOT A FERNCO band. "NO-HUB" bands have metal wraped around them for protection.

Message: Brian, will these home brew system have the same effects on HP as the K&N FIPK kit? Since it will intake cooler air, have a smooth inside to the tube, and have a better air filter. But with the stock air hat there, will the air flow be the same as the K&N? Thanks For the help. Have a good one!

Message:
Joe,
The intake will have the same effect as the K&N as long as the diameter of the pipe is the same also it depends on what you are after, such as ram, cold or just strictly a home brew intake. I do believe K&N makes somewhat of a ram air intake system which will add more horsepower verses just dropping a cone off the pipe. No matter what you do though, as long as you dont disagree with your mass air flow sensor you cant go wrong...it will just not look as pretty.

Message: I would never use steel... it will heat up along with the engine compartment thus heating the intake air.... stay with PVC
