Message: i keep finding plenty of answers about 4x4 engagement issues for trucks with cad. i have a 1993 dakota v8 auto 4x4. the front axle will not engage. the front axle has no actuator and only one hose that i was told was an axle vent. it does not have manual hubs. the selector lever moves freely and so does the linkage on the transfer case, any suggestions as to why my axle doesnt engage or why i have no indicator light coming on(bulb is good). even some info on how my 4x4 system works in this design would be great thanks.

Message: robert, sounds like a problem in the transfer
case or the front diff.
I'm guessing both CV joints are ok because you
did not say anything about noise or clunking.
One way to tell if the transfer is even trying
to work is to keep the truck moving very very
slow and try and put it into 4x4. You should hear
some gears grinding (don't force it). That's
telling you the gears within the case are moving.
That does NOT mean it's 100% ok. You still
could have the main output gear bad.
Good luck...

Message: Actually, 1987 was the first year for the Dakota.
Also, a 93 would not have a CAD on the front axle, Dodge eliminated that on the Dakota in 93 and on the Ram 1500 in 2002. Your 4wd is engaged/disengaged only within the transfercase. Put it up on 4 jackstands with all 4 wheels off the ground. The wheels have to be off the ground, you can't check this while rolling forward. Let it idle in gear with the TC shifted into 4hi and check to see if your front driveshaft is spinning. If not, your problem is definitely within the transfer case. If it is spinning, pull the front diff cover and check for damage.
