Subject: Replaced ONE shock, what a difference!!
IP: Logged

Message:
I had farily new KYB 'Gas-adjust' shocks up front, and one fairly new KYB on the rear, and one of my older MOnroe REFLEX shocks on the drivers side. (Don't ask)

When I crawled under recently to change my manual Tranny fluid, I noticed the REFLEX had the shock oil leaking out of it.

So I went to AutoZone, and all they had was a Monroe SensaTrac, so I bought and installed one of those, where the reflex was.

What a difference!! Much smoother ride, etc, changing one bad shock.

For safety reasons, always change them in pairs, with the same specs.

OH yea, right.

Leaving the worn out, non working one on there is safer.

For all I know, they ARE the same specs.

Sorry, didn't elaborate. Your newer shock is better than the busted one, no question there. However, if the shocks are not partnered, they may be almost as unequal as one good one and one busted one. If your set-up works, then happy driving, man!

chocho,

Thanks,

With the decent new shock on one wheel, all of them work better again.

I thought it was rough on some bumps again, but didn't even think of changing ONE shock, till I saw the oil leaking from it.

When I got it out and tested it by hand, it was definitely shot.

And I do understand that in a perfect world, (or on a race vehicle, etc.) that all the shocks should dampen at the same rate.

My ride is much better again. Much less wheel hop too. Even though I have the helper springs trick mounted in front of the axle, I was getting some wheel hop again. ( LIke when taking off on gravel, or a wet street.)

Texas Todd these truck and other trucks have a tendency for rear wheel hop if thats what experiencing and more noticeable with to much air in your tires and no weight in the bed but bad front shocks cause to, my left side I notice was leaking but not the right? strange huh? I replaced them both for the peace and to have Monroe REFLEX thought they were a better shock, don't beilieve true especially when you live in a pothole state MI hard on any shocks up here

Personally, I think the Reflex's loose their nice ride quality somewhere around 30-50K. Past that they are no better than the OEM shocks, it's one of the parts you have to maintain on the truck for best performance. While they might still look fine on the outside, the internal workings are not up to snuff.

I've had Reflex's on 3 different vehicles and love their ride, but noticed they do wear out after a few years.

Heck, I read somewhere that performance car nuts replace the shocks every 8-12K or something like that, that does seem excessive.
