Subject: 4.7 oil filter cover IP: Logged
Message: Has anyone ever removed the plastic thingy that covers the oil filter on their 4.7? (Mine is a 2003.) I just changed my oil again and spent most of my time cussing at that thing. Its hard for me to grab the filter to twist it off, and then once I do, I cant get my hand and filter out simulaneously. And of course, thats after oil spilled all over it because the hole doesnt line up with the oil filter when gravity does it's thing.
Am I just being an idiot when I drop my oil filter? Does anyone else have this issue?
Thanks,
Jay

Be glad you dont have the 3.9. I hated changing oil on that thing (when I had it). The filter was kinda behind the passenger side suspension assembly. If the exhaust was hot, you were guaranteed to burn yourself after convoluting your arm up there.
I think the 4.7 would be an absolute breeze to change without the plastic cover. Albeit, not as easy as your 3.7 if you can do it from the top-side. I just dont know if that plastic cover serves an important function I'm not aware of and my truck will explode or something if I take it off. (Thats an obvious sarcastic exaggeration - but you get my point).

Message: it's used to protect the oil filter from road debris. When I bought my truck (used from dealer) It did not have one, i had them give install one.
I do a lot of highway driving and run over tire chunks all the time. I also do a lot of off road (dirt/gravel) roads with a lot of rocks and sticks that can kick up. It's a little extra added protection in my opinion.
I'm actually thinking about making one out of metal instead of plastic for better protection. Mine has some scratches on it and will eventually crack.

Message: Some use a plastic soda bottle as a funnel, say they put it over the filter when unscrewing. With a plow frame in the way, I had to find another way to access it - it's pretty easy to get to it through the left fender well. Since I change tires/wheels in the spring/fall; I just do an oil change with synthetic at the same time. If running one set of rubber, you might rotate your tires while doing an oil change. Just a couple ideas some could find less messy.
