Subject: cost to replace worn rings IP: Logged
Message: Can anyone give me a ballpark estimate on having worn rings replaced on a 1997 318. Ive got a major blow-by problem and cant figure it out. Im going to have to have someone look at it but want to make sure Im not getting ripped off on price.

Message: That's a big job. Requires removal of the pistons, and honing of the bore. That's a lot of labor. Figure 15 hours at $75 an hour. If the engine is that worn, you should really consider a rebuild. It would probably be cheaper.
I'v not priced a Dodge, but in the Ford world it's generally cheaper to get a quality crate motor than it is to rebuild an old one.

Message: Crate engine is the way to go. If your rings are that bad the rest of the internal parts have issues also. some major.Save yourself a heart breaker. Do it right or dump it

Message: j, who told you it was rings? The reason I ask is, it's more likely that valve guide seals would wear first. I have a 97 and I've rebuilt the heads once but the rings are fine. It still runs like new and I base that on the compression test, leak down test and feel in my behind test.
It is possible to do a ring job with the engine in the truck. I think it would be too costly to pay someone else to do it but a competent shade tree mechanic should be able to do it. This is no substitute for a proper rebuild but it will get you by for a surprisingly long time.

Message: jgreen, you didn't say how many miles are on the truck, but if you have any broken rings, it will make it have a lot of blow-by. I would do it myself and see what it looks like. If the rings don't look bad, I would suspect the heads, so you could have a new set of valve seals installed, along with a valve job, and the rings, and it should run a lot better. If you do it your self, check the bearings, if they look bad I would replace them as well.
Good Luck

Message: jgreen a leakdown test will tell you where you problem is. I would suggest starting there before you decided on what to do. We just installed a magnum 5.9 remaned engine at work and with the old on for a core the total bill including labor and all was around $2200 1800 for the engine and 400 to remove the old and install the new engine.

Have you checked the intake manifold yet? There or the valve seals are usually the most common.

Message: Intake manifold was replace. How can you tell if valve seals need to be replaced?
