I get 12-13 in mixed city (lots of long traffic lights - most travel time spent idling) and freeway (blast up to 90 MPH to keep from getting hit from behind only to have to slow down to 15 MPH a couple minutes later. The 15 MPH stop and go nonsense continues until I get to an off ramp so I can get on surface streets and sit at traffic lights for the next 20 minutes.). Yes, I live in Southern California. To those who are thinking of coming here, please don't - the state's full!
When I take an actual highway trip (80-85 MPH sustained for 100-200 miles), I get around 17-18 MPG. If I can keep my speed down to more legal levels, I can get an honest 21 MPG or better on a long trip.
The 4.7 is a great engine performance wise, but it gulps fuel in normal driving conditions.

Message: I don't get how you all get good gas mileage compared to me... Maybe its because i'm 18 and have a heavy foot? Ehh I'll figure it out sooner or later.

I deliver pizza so my truck does sit and idle for long periods of time which is partly why i get worse gas mileage....

Message: Just got back from a trip to Texas and with three people on board and the back full of misc. junk. I averaged 18/20 cruising around Texas between 70/80 mph. On the return trip I got about 17/18 with speeds between 80/90. When I hit the sub-zero temps in the north my mileage gradually dropped to 15 or a bit less. My intake temp was reading about 20-25 degrees. Speed and outside air temperature played a big part in what kind of gas mileage I could expect.

Message: I sould think the sub zero temps would give you better MPG, provided no strong headwinds.
ON the same stretchs of highway around where I live and drive to work, I can see as much as a
+/- 2mpg depending soely on the wind conditions.
I average 18+, mostly highway, 2001, 4.7 manual, QC, 2WD. ON highway trips, highway only, I've seen 21+ no problem.

Message: Todd - why would you think "sub zero temps would give you better MPG" ? Since you are already talking about the effect of have to punch through the air (wind), don't you realize that cold air is denser ? I'd think even a "conservative" like you could figure that one out. Perhaps we should reserve political comments for the off topic board - what do you think ? (The conservative barb is due to a liberal barb you threw out in the "sludge thread" !)

Message: Yea, but if you saw the little smiley face, I was kidding. This is not the place for any serious kinda stuff like that. Sorry you got so defensive.
The colder denser air, also holds a higher potential for an increased A/F charge. That's why I mentioned that.
He didn't mention any headwind differences.

Message: denser air is harder to push through
it also takes more fuel int he engine because there is more oxygen, therefor you use more fuel
that and the winter addatives they put in gas so it does not freeze hampers mileage as well

Message: 'denser' air harder to push thru, Hhmmm
I know it seems to make sense, but can you measure it? Objectively?
I objectively know that an engine will make SLIGHTLY more power when the humidity and temp are lower. This should just about be taken up by the 'denser' air when driving. Again, how are you gonna measure the denser airs' resistence to the forward motion.
And the original post stated that when he hit the colder temps, his MPG dropped significantly, as in the same tank of gas.
I think it was the winds of the front he drove into.
Yes I agree with alot of what the Bee and Kow had said, but if you read N56629's post, I'm betting on the winds much more than 'denser' air, or additives. ;-)

Message: Yes Todd, it could be measured, but not easily.
And I'm sorry you got so offensive. Just because someone posts something negative with a smily face doesn't make it less offensive. Kind of like a smirk you'd like to knock off some joker's face; know what I mean ? The constant negative rubs from conservatives gets real old.
