Subject: Dakota 2.2 Headgasket IP: Logged
Message: Just replaced the head gasket on my son's Dakota. The head was cracked, so the machine shop got a new one and installed my valves, springs etc. Installed the new head. After a couple of minutes of running, it started to smoke very badly. I removed the head and installed it again, this time with mopar head gaskets. Same issue, after a couple of minutes is starts to smoke very badly. The truck didn't use any oil or smoke at all, before the head gasket blew. I believe that I did everthing correctly and if the machine shop did their part correctly, there shouldn't be any trouble. Is there something unique to these 2.2 engines that I should be looking out for. Any advice?

Message: What color was the smoke. Also did you use new head bolts. I dunno on this particular truck, some use torque to yield or "stretch bolts" that should be replaced or at least checked with a gauge before reinstalling them.

Message: Shadetree, the smoke was blue oil smoke. I couldn't smell any coolant in the exhaust. Yes, I used new head bolts both times I installed head gaskets. Thanks Jack

Message: Have you checked the plugs to see if they have oil on them. That might help isolate what cylinder is causing you problems. I don't think its anything you did. Just out of curiousity have you tried a compression or cylinder leak down test on it. The oil most likely would either be coming through the valve seals or the rings.

Message: Was it really a new head or a used one. Did the shop check the valve guides for wear if used and WAS NEW oil seals used. Problem has to be in this area as the bottom end was not disassembled.

Message: Shadetree, I pulled each plug wire, one at a time while it was running, and that had no affect on the smoke. I ran a compression check, and each cy was between 120 and 130 psi. I don't know how to do a leak down test?
OBIO3, The head was new, the valves and springs were installed from my old head. I don't really know if the head came with guides or if the shop installed them. ditto with the seals.

Message: Old valves and old springs should be ok if the guides are new or were with in speck. It's possible they forgot to install the oil seals or installed the old ones. When seals get old they will eventually become hard. They can keep working ok as long as they were not disturbed. They couldn't install your old springs/valves with out removing seals and reinstalling. That's a trick I myself would never attempt. Check each and every valve steam to see if one or more was left off.
