Subject: 4.7 clutch fan removal IP: Logged
Message: It's often been posted this can be removed by putting a wrench on the large nut and giving it a pop with a hammer; but that didn't work for mine. Maybe because it's been on there 8 years ? Others removed theirs sooner to get by with just the electric fan; I was reluctant to do that since I tow near the limit in summer heat. The pulley has holes in the face about 3" apart that will accept 1/4" bolts. Something could be fabbed up, but I found Autozone has an AC clutch holding tool (OEM#27000, their#150540) that I was able to modify easily with a couple 1/4"x1" bolts to keep the pulley from turning - then still had to pop the tool with a hammer despite also having a length of pipe on it for more leverage. That worked well, and with a new water pump and idler pulley, the Dak's now quieter under the hood than the day it was new (I've left the clutch fan off for now). Hope this helps someone. Figure I saved a good bit of change over paying someone else to do the work; and caught everything before catastrophic failure.

Message: Kowalski, that's a good tip glad to hear its quieter now than before as well. I took my fan off the hub then put the hub back on, but mine is an 88 so its a little different than yours.
Have a Happy New Year!!!

Message: Very easy to fabricate a 'spanner' to hold the
water pump pulley, a 24" long 1x1" angle iron
with two 1/4" x 1"long bolts, bolted thru at the
proper distance (3 1/8" centers) will do the trick.
A pipe wrench or large adjustable wrench
will removed the fan clutch hub.

Message: Kowalski,
On my 4.7, I simply stuck a longer, (4-6") straight phillips tip screw driver thru one of the holes in the pulley, then butted it up against a ridge on the water pump.
Then a pipe wrench, a whack or tap of a hammer, came right off.

Message: Or...
If you really want to feel handy,
you can fabricate a tool like the 'dude'
suggests.
Think a little, look in your tool box, and try the phillips screw driver. A skinny flat tip screw driver will work the same. Once you 'pop' the initial tension, Comes off easy.

Message: I tried the screwdriver method before making
that 'homemade pulley holder' but,
didn't want to risk cracking the water pump
casting or bending the pulley doing it that way.

Message: Yeah, I guess Todd missed where I noted how much tighter mine was too, likely due to the length of time it was on there. I wasn't worried about the pump since I was changing it out, but this would have bent any screwdriver skinny enough to fit in there for sure. In the end it took two of us to do this, with a freind who's a logger holding the wrench while I hit the spanner about as hard as I could - and I'm a carpenter with a pretty fair hammer hand...
I don't believe his way would have worked on mine; even if I was willing to pretzel a screwdriver.

Message: OK Kowalski,
I understand yours was not, no prob.
Mine was really easy to get off, turned off right away with a light 'whack' of the hammer.
