Subject: No Headlights IP: Logged
Message: Need some help here please. Headlights are not working on my 98 Dakota CC. The lights will come on if I hold the turn signal lever in the flash to pass position. If I let it go there is no high or low beams. All fuses seem to be good. I replaced the headlight switch, no change. The schematics in the manual show a leadlamp relay but no auto parts stores around here stock it and I'm not sure where it's located. Anyone have any suggestions on what the problem is?

Message: Maybe remove the combination switch from the steering column and check its operation. A Haynes book should have instructions on how to check the switch with an ohm meter or volt meter. There is a chance it could be the relay but it doesn't sound very likely in your truck. Unless they get wet or damaged somehow, relays hardly ever fail on their own. This sounds like an open circuit in the low/high beam part of the combination switch to me, because the lights work when you hold the bright light/flash to pass position. Combination switch is probably a dealer or junkyard item. If you do need to replace the relays, they should be located in the power distribution center next to the battery. There's a schematic inside the cover to show which one it is.
Hope this helps,
Jimmy

Message: Jimmy,
Good call. It was the multi function switch. $57 at Autozone.
Thanks for responding.

Message: Glad to know you got it fixed. Even better to know AZ had the part. I didn't really think they or any other parts store would carry it. It's probably a lot more expensive at the dealer, too.

Message: So is the multi function switch the headlight on off switch/dome light/fog light switch to the left of the steering wheel or is it the high beam/blinker stalk on the steering column?

Message: Also, it looks like the steering column cover is a torx head bit. Do I remove the two torx screws in the recesses AND the silver torx screw I can see that is not in a recess? Anything going to go "sproing" on me when I pull the casings or the switch off? Seems pretty straight forward...

Message: The multi-function switch is the high-beam/low-beam/wiper switch found on the left side of the steering column. I seem to remember when I removed the steering column covers from my own Dakota there were only 2 or 3 torx head screws holding it in place. I don't believe the silver one had to be removed to remove the column covers. Nothing sprung out or came apart either, there's not much in there but some wires and the steering column itself.

Message: Always a good idea to disconnect the battery
before getting near the air bag. All it takes is
one spark to the air bag wiring and as Ron puts
it "sproing" and "there she blows" lol
