Subject: Fixed: ABS and Brake Lights at 60mph IP: Logged
Message: A while ago I posted on here about my ABS and Brake lights coming on at 60 mph, at which point I would experience a total loss of the ABS system until the truck was turned off and restarted. Most of the replies consisted of "reset the PCM".
I wanted to post the solution since I searched the archives and couldn't really find anything similar, although the problem is pretty straightforward.
The problem, in my case, was caused by the tone ring in the differential having missing or lost teeth. At high speeds this causes the ABS monitors, which are driven by the rear axle speed sensor, to become disoriented and shut down until a restart.
This now seems pretty obvious to me, but not even my local 5-star dealership was able to diagnose the problem. So I thought I'd post in case someone comes along searching this problem in the future.
Also, I had the differential rebuilt 3 years ago, due to the infamous limited slip clutch clips breaking off. I've heard that a common cause for the teeth on the tone ring breaking is when the differential chunk or the tone ring itself is dropped by a clumsy mechanic.
Finally, my local 4x4 guy says he has pulled apart plenty of these differentials where the clips had broken off, and he has simply removed the clips from the housing and let it be. Never had a problem with one coming apart or seizing up on him. Wish I would have known that before I dropped $1,500 to have it rebuilt a few years ago.
