Subject: Four Wheel Drive Noise
IP: Logged

Message:
I have been noticing recently when I have my 4 wheel drive engaged, it makes a ticking sound from the front end when making a turn. I figure that's the cv shaft.

However, this morning, it had snowed, so i had my 4wheel drive on for a long while, and it was making a clunking sound from the front end. Kinda the the best way to explain it is it sounded like a rod knocking in the engine, except not that loud (it's not a rod knocking).

Can a cv shaft make that clunking noise when the vehicle is going straight? Or how about under a load going up a hill with the wheels straight?

I sure hope this isn't a transfer case problem.

Also, how hard is it to replace the cv shaft on a 2002 4wd dakota?

Yup, the noise can continue to get worse until the joint fails...

I recently ran into this with my 01qc and it was the front driveshaft. The transfer case end of shaft failed ( cv type joint) due to rubber boot that seals joint tearing. I bought a replacement shaft online from advance auto part#659151 for $301.89.

Mine too. I installed the conversion shaft 659151(a ujoint at each end) and didn't like the new shudder and vibration that came with it. I guess the aftermarket should not change the factory design. I yanked it out and took it back...can't be good on the tcase or diff. I'm told I can get a cv kit to fix the driveline for $160 at CV axle express in SLC, UT. AWD 01 QCD 4.7L Auto 112k mi.
