Subject: Brake Drum Question IP: Logged
Message: This is going to sound like a stupid question to most of you.
I need to do the rear brakes on my '00 4.7. My neighbor tells me instead of buying new shoes, to just buy a new drum, then all I have to do is slip off the old drums and slip on the new. He says the new ones come with shoes, springs, etc. everything all built in.
Is he right?
PS--I've done lots of my own work to this truck including front brakes, just haven't had to do the rears yet. They have 130,000 miles and are just now starting to squeak a bit in the mornings.

Message: I just did some work on the rear brakes on my '00 4.7 2WD. The drum brakes are just like any others - the drums come off once you get the wheel off AND don't have the parking brake set(although if they have never been off before you will have to pry/cut off the little retaining clips that held the drums on in the assembly line). The shoes are mounted to the backing plates, not the drums. You will need to remove the retaining springs and the return springs. It's a bit of a pain, and you should only do one side at a time in case you need to look at the other side for reference. It is by NO means done by sliding off the old drum and sliding on a new one.
If the shoes look like they still have lots of meat left on them, and the drums aren't scored or excessively worn, it could be that all they need is a good cleaning. Use brake parts cleaner, but be careful not to get any on the rubber parts.

Message: I wouldn't be taking a lot of advice from your neighbor. It would appear that he really doesn't know what he's talking about.

Message: Well, I'm glad I asked. It didn't sound right to me. I've done a ton of my own work to this truck--swapped the AC evaporator and compressor, master brake cylinder and brake booster, front brake pads, power steering, and so forth--just never had to work on drum brakes before. So it makes sense that my intuition was saying that he was off.
