Subject: Dodge recall! IP: Logged
Message: I just heard on the news that 01 and 02 Dodge
Dakota's are being recalled. Seems when in PARK,
engine off and key pulled, it can jump out of
park.
This as never happened to me 02....... yet
BTW, Dakota is not the only ones being recalled
for this problem..

Message: 9 incidents with reported injuries for over 600,000 vehicles.
And not one recall for bad ball joints which affects millions of Chrysler vehicles.
This is BS. The Germans sure made a fukking mess during their 10 year occupation.

Message: ummm...
I had my ball joints replaced free under the ball joint extended warranty. Although it did take forever to get that recall/warranty/whatever.
And I would be PISSED if I got ran over with my own truck. I had a (old, OLD) ford jump out of park and into reverse on me once, with the engine running and pointed down a hill. I had to jump back into it while it was starting roll (dumb I know, but I was 19 and invincible ;-) ). It does need to be fixed. I dont think 9 injuries are something to scoff at. Of course, a lot worse things have happened.
My question is, how does this happen on a fully electronically controlled tranny? wtf? bad position switch?
Overall, my truck still runs just fine, so I have no problem with the "German occupation." (Yet.)

NO, it's not OK if you set the building on fire!
LOL
I am awaiting my recall notice. I wonder if the condition still exists when using the parking brake. I am guessing it only keeps the vehicle from rolling if the park mechanism breaks.

Message: Jay,
I wasn't scoffing at anything. I think you missed my point completely. I'll reiterate:
During all the time that DaimlerBenz owned CHrysler, they flat out refused to recall anything except with a gun pointed right at their square heads. In spite of all the evidence there was a serious design defect with ball joints, not only on Daks but on Rams, Caravans, RamVans, you name it, the owners refused to acknowledge any problems.
Fast forward to 2007 and Chrysler is no longer owned by DaimlerBenz and we have a recall that, in comparison to the ball joint fiasco, is small potatoes. And this "issue" didn't just appear over night, the former owners again knew full well there was a serious safety defect but chose to do nothing about it.
I guess what I was trying to say is, the Germans were douche bags.

Message: Hay miltonwaddums, I've heard of stick shift units
being in gear with engine off (key pulled too)
wiring shorted and the starter began to run..
My point is, both stick and auto's the emg (foot)
brake ought to be used. Stick shifts should also
be left in nutural also.

Message: Stan,
I wasn't accusing you of scoffing, I'm just saying we shouldn't scoff. I think we may have been reading too much into each other's posts. Oh well, friggin internet - hard to type body language and voice inflections.
And yes, this is small potatoes compared to ball joints. But it may be a whole lot cheaper for Chrysler to do. Ever see Fight Club? "AxBxC=X, if X is less than the cost of the recall, [they] dont do it." My point is that there are (sadly) a lot more factors than safety in doing a recall.
Radioman,
I've never heard of this happening, but I can see how. I'm just voicing my overall dislike of autos. I just bought a 2003 QC 4.7 4x4 auto, and its the first auto I've ever owned. I thought I wouldnt mind it, but I'm bored when I drive and I get bad mpgs.

Message: Well yeah, the park mechanism is mechanical, however, with this transmission, I'm assuming that when you put the idiot lever in "P", it activates an electric solenoid, or some other gizmo that engages the park mechanism. I know that there is NOT a mechanical linkage from the lever to the tranny on these transmissions, so it has to be eletronic at least at some point.
I am assuming that by "jumping out of park" there is a signal of some sort unlocking the park mechanism, instead of the mechanism failing.

Can't argue with that one. I guess we should both write Bob Eaton a letter and whom else was involved in that "TAKE OVER" and get them to admit was all about the money.

Message: It is a SAD SAD fact that safety takes a back seat
over profit isn't it miltonwaddums?
I just stuck $700.00 into my Dakota.. Most of it
was spent looking for a electricial problem. It
was finally located in the steering wheel area
caused by the tilt wheel pulling and pushing on
the wiring. The truck is only 4 years old with 44K
and this happends? My 79 AMC has tilt also.. To
date, wiring in that area is just fine.
I really don't know what my next truck will be BUT
doubt it will be a Dakota or Ram. The new Dakota's
are just too cheap looking and the Rams can't pass
too many gas stations even with the V6.
I hope to keep my 02 for a long time yet. Might as
will, not much trade-in value anymore.

Message: milton,
If you went to an auto tranny, it wasn't an 'upgrade'!
I always use my parkiong brake anyway while parked. It keeps the rear brakes adjusted, thus taking pressure off the front brakes.
Did you know I have the original brakes, front and rear, original everything, pads, rotors, shoes, drums.....and I've got over 131,000 miles on my heavy, QC, 4.7 manual SLT dak!!!!

Message: TexasTodd,
Yeah I know, thats why I put "upgrade" in quotation marks. Oh well, live and learn I guess.
When I traded in my last truck (5 speed) it had 80k miles and all original brakes. They showed little to no signs of wear. I could have easily gone another 20k miles, if not 50k like yourself. It was a RC 2wd V6, which is (relatively) lightweight.
