Subject: 01 QC 4x4 4.7L, do i buy? IP: Logged
Message: I am looking at a 2001 Dakota Quad Cab SLT, 4x4, 4.7L with 181000 miles. Sold by a Dodge dealeship (parts truck?) at auction, used car dealer asking $7500. Exterior looks awesome, no damage, Leer cap, Rhino Liner. I offered $5750, he finally accepted, should I buy? Can't believe the condition with the high miles, but it looks like it can last another 50k miles or so. It will need tires soon, any recommendations?

Message: On the positive side, if it was a Dodge dealer's parts truck, it may have had all the required maintenance done.
If all you need is 50k miles from the truck, 5750 works out to be about $9 per mile, not including the cost of the tires it needs.

Message: Kenwoody, I think you reversed your calcluation. 5750/50,000 is $.115 per mile, not $9. Better be driving a Bugatti for $9 a mile :)
I haven't blue booked the truck but the 7500 seems down right silly with so many miles. Your negotiated price seems better. I'm guessing that the 22,000-26,000 miles per year would have been mostly highway. Engine should be good for what you need, I wonder about the tranny and diffies though. I have an identical '02 and love it if that helps any. Expect about 13-15 winter MPG and 15-16 summer MPG.

Message: OOPS!!! You're right. I got that very backwards.
50,000 miles divided by $5750 is miles/dollar.
$5750 divided by 50,000 miles is dollars/mile.
11.5¢ per mile is way better.

Message: Thanks for the replies. I bought the truck today for $5000, with me fixing the inspection issues. I spent $300 for new muffler, front pads, and rear shoes, plus $65 for inspection fee. So total invested is $5365. I am happy with the purchase.
Any recommendations for good highway tires?

Message: I'd go to Tirerack dot com and see the customer reviews. I was set to replace my OEM tires with BF Goodrich All terrains K/O. They look aggressive, have good wet/snow traction, and apparently wear well. I remember the slightly larger size was actually cheaper and would fit your truck (265 75 r16). A little more sidewall to these than stock.
But then I did something really stupid with the truck in reverse while towing and smoked a tire/rim. Insurance picked up a new tire/rim and moved the spare to an aluminum rim, thereby only needing to buy 2 more goodyear RT/S tires. So I have no BF Goodrich review to offer. My neighbor likes them on his 99 Silverado.

Message: The GF Goodrich's are excellent in bad weather - I've been plowing with them for many years. While they ride smoother than most agressive lugged tires, and they run fine for me on the highway, I wouldn't call them a true "highway" tire though. They'll be a little noisier and have a little more rolling resistance than what I'd call a real highway tire; but be much better in bad weather.
