Subject: 1999 front wheel noise IP: Logged
Message: My 1999 RT 5.9 has a noise in the left front. I encountered this issue upon getting it back from having new headers installed. It sounds exactly like a bad case of steel on steel in the brake. Problem is the brakes are in excellent shape, confirmed by me and 2 mechanics.
I get the noise in 2 ways. First is when braking.
Second is when turning left, the harder and quicker the turn, the worse the noise. Along with the noise you can always feel it in the steering wheel also. If I brake along with turning it is worse still. My regular mechanic thought and still says it is my steering rack. My friend that is a jet pilot and pretty damn good mechanic also, says he feels it is in the wheel. I also think it is coming from the wheel. Everything we can see, touch, feel, twist turn and shake is tight and sound. It received new upper A frames a year ago due to the ball joints being worn out. My friend and I feel it may be a wheel bearing. This has a sealed hub unit that you have to purchase for about $150, and you can not just eaisly check the bearing.
So, can a wheel bearing run smooth, quiet, true and only indicate a problem when turning one way or under braking? Or, can a steering rack do something like this. Or, what can this be?
Thanks, Steve Sipe

Message: As any good mechanic knows, start by looking at what was removed to facilitate the header install. It could be something as crazy as...they forgot to put the nut back on the engine mount, power steering pump or a brake caliper bolt is not tightened. I would ask the person who installed the headers to re-check what was removed/ loosened/ and-or reinstalled to facilitate the maintenance. This is why in the aircraft industry they have inspectors. 21 yrs (retired) Naval aviation myself... Good luck troubleshooting.

Message: My wheel bearing went about 2 years ago...It sounded more like a "whurring" noise than a metal to metal harsh sound that you have. It also got louder during turning like you said. Just jack it up and spin it pretty fast. If you here it catching its probably the bearing.
