hello thanks for advice on my 99 dakota rear end
I know this is a dakota site but I have a 2003 durango that I had to replace water pump on after 45000 miles and know also replace fan clutch the problems is that you can start the the engine and let it idle all day and wont get hot but the minute you start to drive it it get hot goes (used heat gun temp at top rad. hose and bottom hose was 235 ) when i stop. tested and replaced cap swapped out thermostat with two differant one still same problems took to freinds shop gas tester on anti freeze for cracked head or intake gasket it was negitive I used a orrielly water pump when replaced it and thermostats should I have went to dealer for these parts I also made sure that the lower hose was not closing I was told by my freinds shop manager that he had to replace the water pump on his 70 charger and that it started to do same thing but it was because the after market water pump flowed to fast is this possible ? thanks in advance for help in this problem

Possible, but unlikely. More likely to see that when someone removes the thermostat - that will control how fast the coolant circulates. Did you try flushing it ? Try pulling codes ? Which motor ?

it sounds like you got a reverse running water pump its running the wrong way make sure you go to the dealer and get the correct water pump a reverse running water pump will cause this kind of problem it overheats when you start loading the engine because coolant isn't flowing through the water jacket its just sitting there it has to flow through the pop off hole in the thermostat try taking the thermostat out and see if it overheats it may not also the rad might be blocked or you might have an air lock try purging the block of air by opening the top vet plug on the block also now this is a long shot make sure you have the serpentine belt routed the right way because if its routed the wrong way hard to do i know but if its routed the wrong way this might happen as well good luck i hope you find the cause of your overheating problem i know these can be a bitch to find

Especially follow up on dave2's advice about the water pump. The water pump for a crate motor 5.9 or the older v-belt version does run backwards from the serpentine belt motors. Double check the aplication.

I got to go with the reversed water pump. Re- builders are really great mixing this kind of stuff up. Water pumps is one of the things I refuse to buy rebuilt.

When I tried to take my ('95 V-8) radiator in for repair (new core), I was told by the radiator shop that they could not remove/ reinstall tanks on it because they (tanks) are plastic. Aren't they plastic on a '99 as well? If so, I would question what they actually did. Maybe they have special tools to crimp/ seal the plastic to the aluminumn.
