Subject: Another rear end Question IP: Logged
Message: Hey All,
I have a 97 Dakota 4x4 SLT with what I'm told 8.25" Differential and 3.90 gears. I've had problems with the ABS light, and have tracked it to a messed up tone ring on the rear end. Sensor was replaced, but we found the ring to be chewed up. My mech. says I'm better off finding a used rear end and replacing it all. My only thought is I bought this truck new, it's got 350,000kms on it, and it's all mine, I'd like to keep it that way. Is there any faults to having it rebuilt? Or would I be best to take the advice and move on.
What should be replaced when rebuilding, just the bearings??
Any info is appreciated. Thanks.

Message: I would find another one,
check it for straightness and
take my time inspecting it properly,
cleaning, checking the bearings/gears.
once complete, simply replace the one
on the truck and re-sell it or keep it
as a spare.

Message: Right now, found a replacement rear end off a 2000, that will work with minor mods. But my only thought is that it's not new either, and who knows how long until it will end up like the one I have.
Because the tone ring is messed up (teeth chewed), am I to believe a bearing or something has caused issue? Could I get away with just replacing the bearings? I guess it's all really speculation until it comes apart. just want to be happy when it's done.
Thanks for your input.

Message: Rear axles are sorta 'either they work, or they dont'.
Once something goes wrong inside: chewed tone ring, bad bearing/gears,
unless in the very early stages of the problem, it often start a chain reaction
with the other components.
and since there's no oil filter, (hopefully there's a magnet stuck somewhere
to catch the larger pieces) every component is going to be running in gritty oil.
Your decision,
if you want to start inspecting everything closely you'll probably find other worn items
or, just replace whatever's evidently broken and hope for the best.
By the way, to replace the tone ring, the carrier/ring gear will have to be removed and disassembled. Once bolted back up, the backlash will have to be re-ajusted.
