Message: You have two choices: 9.25 or 8.5. Obviously, the 9.25 is better for heavy duty work. IIRC, the 8.5 has a round cover, and the 9.25 has a squared off oval cover.
Traclock is the dodge version of a limited slip diff. It has clutches that help distribute the torque for a limited slip (not no slip) operation. Chevy calls it Positraction. I forget what Ford calls it. Not at all like a detroit locker.
Even with the use you describe, the diff should easily last more than 20K miles. Should be more like 50-60K miles on stock parts. The builder must have done something wrong, or used the wrong parts.
If you do get it rebuilt you might consider a detroit locker. Depends on your driving conditions, though.

Message: Dodge 8.5 , 9.25 , Ford 9", etc
is simply the diameter in inches of the ring gear used in that differential
assembly, a simple way to identify rear axles from different manufacturers.
Another method often used to identify GM axles is the number of bolts
on the rear cover, GM 10 bolt, GM 12 bolt etc.
(both of these can have different ring gear diameters depending on application)

Message: you'll often see the dodge version advertised as "anti spin".

Message: The two sizes are actually 8.25 and 9.25 (not 8.5) with the octagonal cover 9.25 being stronger. Limited slip is an option, and the factory version more problematical than something like an Auburn limited slip - which is what I've had good results with. If it's the factory limited slip that is acting up, there is also an open rear version which doesn't have as many problems. Both sizes are known for potential prblems with the carrier bearings, but should last much longer than what you are seeing.
