Subject: Clicking noise in engine bay? IP: Logged
Message: In the last 800 miles I have heard a clicking sound coming from the engine bay. It revs up w/ the engine and is really noticeable on the highway or just getting off the highway. With the hood open I listened for clicking and it seems to be coming from behind the intake manifold on the passenger side. Any ideas?
My truck is a 03 3.9L QC.
Also I am having problems with my fuel and coolant level gauge. It basically works when it wants to or keeps moving to the "right" level and back down again. haha, I love this truck.

Message: Get a mechanics stethoscope and probe around with that. It is basically a doctors stethoscope with a long piece of metal on it that you touch against different parts of the motor/exhaust to listen for the clicking sound.
I don't remember where I got mine. I'm sure they have them at Autozone and places like that though. They are pretty inexpensive. They also are kind of fun. Listening to the oil filter, you can actually here the oil passing through it and stuff like that. Just beware, use common sense and caution near the belts and fans on your engine.
The only real clicking sounds you should here are the fuel injectors and the EVAP solenoid which on my truck is a little black thing on the firewall drivers side, it has two vaccuum type hoses going into and a plug. It almost always makes a clicking sound but when it goes bad, it gets really loud. If it is bad, you probably have to replace the charcoal canister as well because the canister probably leaked charcoal through the hose and into it.
A loud clicking noise could also be an exhaust leak which is really common on these trucks thanks to exhaust manifold studs/bolts that break where the exhaust manifold meets the head.
Or of course, saving the worst for the last, it could be a lifter or something else in the valvetrain.
Good luck!
