Subject: Rear end noise.... IP: Logged
Message: Hey,
I have been a complete doof. Thought the noise in the rear end was a bad tire.. Put about 40,000 on a set of Toyo Proxes R/T, and figgured the noise was a bad belt or something, maybe breaks...
But today brought it in for a set of Bridgestone Duler A/T Revo's and the reputable mechanic told me that it was not breaks, and not the wheels. Looks like something in the rear end. He did not have a chance to really pull the whole rear end apart, and wants me to come back thursday. The mech did say he strongly feels it is the bearings.
Now I do not know much about this, but do know the noise has gotten worse. A bit about the truck a 2002 4.7L Quad 4x4. It is an auto and all I know is the axil ratio is 5.5 whatever that means. The truck has 75,000 miles and I have had it from the beginning.
So anyone have any experience with this? Is he talking about wheel bearings? Could it be the diff? I am just frustrated.. Mad that I did not catch this earlier and just wrote it off as road noise, (which is what it sounds like, a set of loud tires...)
Anything I should ask when they take apart my rear end? (Figguratively as well as literally there....)

Message: no idea until you open it and inspect -every- component closely,
from a single bad bearing
to having the complete axle/diff assembly been chewed up.
anything is possible.
by experience, most problems left unatended create other ones along the way

Message: Have them check for pinion slop and backlash. Normally backlash should be set at somewhere between .005 to .008. Also if for some reason they do remove the pinion nut make sure they install a new crush sleeve otherwise you wont obtain proper bearing preload. Typically wheel bearing noise will get louder in a turn as the weight of the car shifts from one side to the other. If it is a constant sound it is more than likely internal.

Drove my truck home last night with the new tires.. And the "road noise" seems to be less, but yup, the reciprocal noise is still there. And now I notice that at low speeds it sounds like when there is a high spot on a break, a distinct going around noise.. Real low and gritty. At higher speeds while under power you can hear the low rubbing noise, and when I take my foot off the gas, there is a decrease in the low noise, and the background higher pitch wine can be heard... Guess I will just have to wait till thursday, pay out another 2 hours of labor, and see what they tell me...
Thanks again, and I will let ya know what I find out.

Message: The 8.25 and 9.25 rears, one of which is in your truck, are known for bad carrier bearings. NO such thing as 5.5 rear gear - you might have 3.55, which means for each revolution of the tire, the driveshaft rotates 3.55 times. The other stock ratio that could be in your truck is 3.92.

Message: Kowalski,
Thanks for the info. I tried to find out from the "window sheet" I still keep in the glove compartment, but did not see it on there.
Again, I am not knowledgeable on the rear end stuff, so that is why I am here asking questions! Thanks!
Truck is in today having exploratory surgery... So guess I will know by noon what the damage is.. I am going to ask the mech what rear is in there though, now I have to know. Would that information be part of the VIN number code? Where else could I look in documentation?
Thanks again, and I will keep all posted...

Yup, carrier bearings galled, peeling, shedded shards into fluids. Looking at overhauling entire axle/diff. They summed some of it up, axle bearing, races, diff bearings, races, pinion carrier?
As for what I have, it is the 8.25. They have parts and will be doing the 5+ hours of labor starting now... I asked for parts as I always do, and will have a nice garbage bag of brokens to check out..
Thanks for all your suggestions, hopefully tonight I will be driving home in a truck that left the Growl in the shop...
