Message: My husband bought a 1990 Dodge Dakota Convertible and was told today that it was not original. This was by a gentleman that owns a garage. He said that someone customized it for us. Well then he ran the VIN # and said that it said it was just a truck. Our title tells us that it is a pickup but doesn't say anything about it being a convertible. How can we find out for sure if it is the real thing? Where do we look for that information?

Message: why would it be custom?
i think all the convertibles they made were sports
so either red or black, and i really doubt anyone went through all the work to make one when they could have just bought one

Message: Christine, a helpful dealer could tell you if it is a factory convertible or not if you provide them with the VIN.

Message: The convertibles were built by a company called ASC (American Sunroof Company) under license from Dodge. All those trucks left the Dodge plant with a roof on them and were modified at ASC's facility before being shipped to the dealers. I believe there should be a decal on the door jamb from ASC. If not, a dealer should be able to verify it's one of the ASC trucks by running the VIN.
They were available in Red, White and Black. Supposedly a couple of Blue ones were also produced though I was never able to verify that.
The production numbers I've seen were:
1989 = 2842
1990 = 909
1991 = 8 (needed to complete ASC's contract with Dodge)
BTW, I have seen a 95 that was modified with the top from a totaled 90 so it is possible. There were also a few ad's in the back of some of the Sport Truck mags for convertible top conversions for various trucks (including the Dakota)
