Subject: Clunk over speed bump IP: Logged
Message: I just recently noticed a loud clunk when driving over a speed bump. It almost sounds like something is loose. I normally hit speed bumps at a slight angle to lessen the “bump”. The loud clunk comes when the passenger side tire goes over first and I don’t hear anything if the drivers side wheel goes over first. I’m not going very fast at all, I would say about 3 – 4 mph (about walking speed). Has anyone else seen something like this? 07 QC Dakota 2500 miles.
Thanks
John

You know who has? The mechanics who will be fixing the truck under warranty. Why not just take it in? Most of us on this board would kill to have our trucks still be under warranty. Sounds like there is something off in the steering or suspension, but why try to diagnose it yourself?

Message: I agree about the warranty, but the last time I brought the truck into the dealer they said all Dakotas do that. I guess I hate wasting my time and the dealers time if its normal or if anyone else has the same issue. The shocks look kinda short and I couldnt find anythign loose under the truck to explain the noise. I guess Ill bring it back to the dealer.

Message: "they all do that" is a lame excuse from a lazy tech. since it is under warranty i'd try another, hopefully more cooperative dealer. if that doesn't work try the DC customer service rep for your area.

Message: yep, daddio's right. and most dealers have speed bumps in their lots. i'd ask the guy to sit in a 07 Dakota with me (which they will still have on the lot) and drive it over a speedbump so that I can be confident that "they all do that".

Message: To many pass on and drive it around some more when I took my 02' in when it was newer and to this day "CLUNCK" over bumps I come to find I have sloppy brake caliper and left upper ball joint boot dry and collasped and went to dealer says "everything is OK and your truck isn't part of the recall only 4x4's but I have a paper which extended my balll joints 10yrs. or 100,000 miles which ever comes first, now truck has 75,000 miles I took it in recently 5 yrs later would you believe got the same reply same dealership and 3 others ???? I think they have to much play in there head and won't take care of you unless your wheel fell off then they tell you heres a DEFECTIVE Ball joint dahhhhhh.... can see that they will wake up when the they to many lawsuits at there back and whats a price of a ball joint(s) and little labor thats why I won't WORK for a dealership bad reputation for them.Better off taken it to a good suspension or good repair shop you can TRUST but thats limited to have to have good mechanic you know there you go.

Message: Daddio, dealerships to me a pain in the a!s only seem to handle serious issues which i see this is one of them and when i went in after i had receive my letter from DCX took my truck and letter to 3 different dealerships and said same bullsh!t. I work in the garage as mechanic for few years in the 90's and to this day anything under warranty they might take care of you and leave you out of vechile a few days then you get it back and amazing something else.I wanted to go and work for a dealership after talking to some mechanics there and there, hearing alot part swaping and sometimes put mask on the problem let it get to be a bigger problem later when out of warranty then costly to the consumer and leaves them in a jam if you are sucker enough to let them empty your wallet and the bad reputation they left with you. I gotten lousy service with warranty with my customers and myself don't see how some of them can be a 5 star dealership for service???......can go on but won't

Message: I had a similar clunking in my '02 QuadCab - on several different occasions. Turns out it was something different (nearly) each time with mine. And the dealer fixed none of them. Dealers suck. I fixed it myself. 1) Balljoint, 2) Front sway-bar bushings, 3) Steering Column Universal Joint, 4) Sway-bar bushings again, 5) Brake Pad separated from backing, 6) Loose Bumper Mount.

Message: Eric, your right on the nail go in for one out 3 or 4 more problems can't they just fix it 1st time and not have to go back for more than 1 time I know you don't always get it the 1st time if you are lucky or just have a good eye or ear or properly trained for specific areas otherwise you have a guessing game with your wallet which most of us don't have TIME and MONEY to spend and would like to be truckin' instead of ......

Message: Well, finally got the truck into the Dealer. Since the weather has gotten a little cooler, (below 10 degrees) I no longer hear the clunk when going over a speed bump. The dealer couldn’t find any problems, so either it went away or whatever was making the noise is temperature sensitive.
At least the dealer replaced the Serpentine belt, we will see if that takes care of the loud screeching I was getting on my cold starts at 4am (I have a feeling it wont).

Message: Its probably the rubber bushings in the suspension. See if it does it on rainy days vs. dry days. If no clunk on wet days it is the bushings. "They all do that."
