Subject: Clearing Engine Codes IP: Logged
Message: I've posted this in the V8 area as well, but figured I should post here instead some of the V6 guys have the same issue.
My check engine light is constanly on (Code P0456). It hasn't gone off since it first came on a few days ago. I've tried taking off the gas cap and putting on my other one, but it's still on. Hoses look good to the gas tank and to the canister. Mind you not sure if there's a pin hole leak or not. Do I have to clear the code (disconnect the battery) to get the light off once the fix is complete (ie. if it was the gas cap and now it's on right, would the light stay on till cleared)? Or should it go out on its own once the fix is done and disconnecting the battery just clears the code from memory so you don't pull it next time the light comes?

Message: Disconnect the battery to clear the code and see if it pops up again. If not then you're good to go.

Message: My '03 had the same code. It came and went but eventually stayed on permanently. I replaced the gas cap, and the light went out permanently after 2-3 days. Disconnecting the battery works, but clears more than just the code as I understand it.

Message: I found the hose that connects to the air filter was off. I reconnected and reset the computer and the light is off now (hopefully stays off!!).
I found a bit of a rough idle, but from what i understand, when you reset the computer, it takes a bit to "re-learn" everything. I'm just happy the light's off now! :-)

Message: If you want instant "code" reset, disconnect the
battery routine.
A fault code like "P0456" can be cleared the
same as above and it will also clear in its own
after so many restarts of the engine. Most other
codes will also *auto* clear too.
In either case, if any code comes back, you have
to keep digging into the problem.
