well be traded my dakota for a 1990 4 runner super disapointed. the performance in this thing sucks its 4wd. so i was lookin into buyin a new dakota but my step mom has a 2006 tacoma quad cab long bed and this thing would walk on my 92 dakota with a beefed v6. anyway. i need some persuasion to get me back to wantin to buy a dakota. the tacomas better on gas and will walk a v8 dakota. a v8 dakota sucks on gas and performance is ok the only goo dthing is that v8 sound. you cant beat it...

Greg,

I don't agree with much of what you stated.

You had a 92, V6 dak, woohoo. the 3.9.

Try driving a mildly modded, (like HO cams), manual, 4.7 dak.

The taco might have walked on your v6, but has yet to stay with my 4.7 QC dak.

I'm with Todd. I've owned two of those little Toyota trucks, so nothing against them here other than their being a little boring. Take it from me, there is no way a v6 Taco will take my v8 Dakota; even before my mods. A freind with one and racing experience tried it, couldn't do it. To say they would is just a lie.

ive driven the mew tacs they are quick for a v6 and they will keep up with a v8 dak but i doubt it will beat it. thats why dodge recently upgraded the new v8. i got a 5.2 and i love it.

heres the deal... lets not kid ourselves the mpgs, youll gain what 3mpg? just bc its a toyota and a v6 doesnt mean good mpgs. and if your looking for good milage go with a compact car. i know the gas sucks but worse comes to worse just get a beater with a heater for 500 on craigslist.

I've beaten the new Taco V6. Their not that fast. I also beat a chevy cobalt SS supercharged last friday night at firebird raceway. I only beat the cobalt by a .05 seconds, but I still beat him.

02 RC 4.7L 2WD 3.55 open, 4spd auto
HO cams, intake, exhaust(crap), superchips, ported and polished stock exhaust manifolds,

The best part of that run was my wife was with me and the A/C was on. WTF? The next run was w/o the wife and a/c off, I ran a tenth of a second slower. Doesn't make sense.

DUDE!!!!- I run my truck in the mud( QC 4.7 4x4) and I have yet to have a Taco with a v6 come even close to my old time of 5.125 throught 200 feet of muck. I have just recently laid down a best time of 4.963 ( thanks to the cooler weather and a tune up!!!) That is running no mods other than adrop in K&N air filter. Weekend after next though, look out!! My SCT flash tool has just come in from KRCperformance. I am going to eat up my competition. Stay with a Dak bro, i don't know anyone who has one that isn't in love with it. Why do you think you don't see them for sale much? OR....when you do, they don't stay on the lots long!!!! Like your underwear though, up to you!!!!

The 4.0L V6 in the Tacoma only has 1HP more than the 4.7L V8 in the Dak, but the 4.7L V8 has 29 more ft./lbs. torque than the Toy's V6. I'm pretty sure the Dak's V8 also makes its numbers in the lower, more useful RPM range. Any way you slice it, a V8 in inherently better. I won't even put the new Dak's V8 specs in here. Too cruel.

I can't find any numbers for MPG on the Toy V6, but the best mileage I ever got with my Dak was 24MPG on a 100 mile 65MPH freeway trip. Daily stop and go with some freeway driving gets me 14-15MPG.

Peak number specs are pretty meaningless; you need to look at a graph across rpm or you will be easily deceived. The v8 Daks make substantially more torque, the toy6 doesn't even come close to comparing power at lower revs. If the Dakota driver has any skill, the Taco will not be keeping up. Anyone who thinks a Taco could keep up to their v8 Dak either doesn't know how to drive, or doesn't have a v8 Dak...

Wylman,

You got the SCT tuner for the 4.7? What can you tune with it? Can you control fuel and timing or is it a basic program like the Superchips?

not trying to be a jerk but start a new thread man.... hotdak

well greg, just drive a newer dak and that should speak for itself. if your comparing anything to a 92 dak v6 i know what you mean. might as well get an s10. but just drive a newer dak v8 and youll fall in love with it.

got to agree with wyleman. dak owners are in love with there trucks and they go quick on a used car lot.

oh and kowalski is on the money like he has stated many times, peak numbers are useless.

I never really understood why people buy a pickup for racing. if i wanted to race i would buy a car. makes sense to me. Even if the dakota was slower, its because its way heavier than all the other mid sizes out there. why? for towing and hauling durability. If the truck weighed as much as a taco, it would be all over the road when towing anything with substantial weight. It makes me even more annoyed when people don't understand why the dakota is heavy. stupid people like that should do us all a favor and drive their puny toyotas into a brick wall.

I just bought a 2008 dodge avenger R/T that has the HO 3.5L V6. It's rated the same HP as my 02 QC dakota 4x4. The Avenger will definately smoke my dakota in track times. But, the avenger can't tow over 6000 lbs. Also the dakota out weights the avenger by about 2000 lbs. I enjoy driving both, I have both for certain uses.

Each vehicle has a specific built purpose. A V6 may be better for fuel economy but you're not going to get the V8 torque (as stated above peak doesn't matter, you're looking at the entire RPM range). I beat many vehicles off the line in my dakota even when towing trailers.

Also, compare the taco to the new 2008 dakota with the new 4.7L with 329 hp and 302 torque.

However toyota (and nissan) do have one thing up on the dakota, the availability of a full size bed in the quad cab. Sad but true.

JAYB- I don't know of any all wheel drive or four wheel drive CARS (Except old AMC Eagles.) that I could run on a MUD track. That is why I race my TRUCK. I have done all types of racing. From Circle track (dirt and asphalt.) to drag racing. I just started racing my 2000 QC DAK in the mud this season. I finished second in the points and didn't start racing until halfway through the season. You can go to promud.com and check it out for yourself. The best part is my truck was stock until this evening. I just flashed my PCM with the SCT. My truck got the tires pretty hot in 2 wheel drive and chirped all four on the asphalt in 4 wheel drive. I tried a test launch at 2000rpm in the dirt and it broke all four tires loose at about 3500rpm. As far as what you can program with the SCT, I had KRC put the 87 octane program in, a stock 97 octane program in and they also put a program in for the cams I am going to install over the winter. It really brought my truck alive this evening. The boys at KRC know their stuff!!! Thei program raised my rev limiter by about 500rpm's and lentghened my shift points a bit too. Simple flash programmer to use and I reccomend it to all of you looking to hop your trucks performance up a little bit. Give them a call or drop Marty an email and let him know I put a good word in for them. The SCT blows the Superchips flash tool out of the water!!!

so i drove the tacoma. quad cab long bed. the bad but impresive part is the truck ran a 6.94 to sixty. people thats a quad cab long bed. im lookin into a extened cab short bed. i also looked at the specs on an 08 dakota. i love the way the ext cabs look and with the new 4.7 you cant go wrong. but heres how i look at it. dont want a car cause it sits WAY to low. love trucks but it cant be slow either. so i looked up the 0-60 on a 08 dakota ext cab its 9.2 seconds with the v8. thats horrible folks

greg... did you look up the weight on both vehicles? (something weve all been saying here)and something as simple as getting different tire sizes can change those times by the way. and did you see how much more the dak can tow? and did you drive the new dak? im guessing no. dont go by the specs and go by how the truck feels and what you like.

oh and if you want a quick truck did you look at the dak rt? those are nice and pretty quick i must say. and youll save money over a new vehicle.

If you want more info on the SCT Tuner then go to bionicdodge.com/bionic. The SCT Tuner is pretty damn close to a stand-alone system. They can do just about anything with it. Fu(k Superchips, go with the SCT.

Finally... a V8. '01 Dodge Dakota RC, 4.7, 5-speed, 3.92 LSD. = R/T Killer.
well at least a stock one

Shoe- I couldn't have said it any better myself. The SCT is the deal.

Greg- Buy the import. Then, I want you to bring the title and race me. Please, don't cry when I run that import "wanna-be-a-pickup" through my father's car crusher! Since when does a v6 in a truck, qualify it as a truck? Not trying to bust your chops but, if you want a v6 import that will get out of it's own way, go buy an Eclipse or something. You came into aDak forum looking to revitalize your interest in Daks, we have done all we can do except let you drive one of our own. Either listen to the "word" of our "gospel" or go against the grain, buy an import and think of "what could have been." I eat import wanna-be trucks for breakfast at the local mud bog with my factory Dak. I can't wait to see what I do to them on the 17th with my SCT flashed Dak. Little inside of why I got the flash tool, I got tired of coming in second to an 80's model pickup with 44 inch tires and over twenty thousand in hop ups. I plan on slamming the door on him Saturday after next. Oh, yeah, have I mentioned I get a steady 16-18 mpg local and 20-22 on the hwy? I am happy with that out of my v8 quad cab 4x4 truck that I can pull just about anything I want with. Including a 27 foot car trailer loaded with Harley parts to a swap meet for the past three years!!!!
