Subject: leaking 5spd?

Message:
Greetings all,

A couple of weeks ago I noticed some fluid on transmission. Looks like it has been in this state for a little while. The fluid was down about an inch in the tranny (NV3500). It is a '98 5.2 with the 5spd. As far as I could tell it was coming from the shift tower. I have heard that this is a somehwhat common problem with manuals. I bought the gasket from the dealer and 3 quarts of MOPAR manual transmission fluid ($10.95 a quart)as the manual states.
Put some RTV silicone on it just to make sure it would seal, but it is still leaking. Never enough to drip, just enough to make the tranny covered in oil on the passengers side. I can tell it is coming from the top of the tranny, but can't see where. The tranny looks like it is bolted together about 5 inches ahead of the shift tower, but I can't see up there good enough to tell if that is where it is leaking. Anyone else had this problem? Seems like an odd place for a leak when there isn't supposed to be pressure in the system. Thanks,

Shawn

hey,
For a while I had the same problem, a leak that I just couldnt find. Mine turned out to be the shift tower was broken. The best way to find your leak is to clean your trany (i mean everywhere), get all the old crud off. Then drive around the block, crawl under and see if you see new fluid, check the shift tower for a new leak. Keep doing this at longer drive periods until you find the leak. Also check you bolds on the shift tower to make sure they are at there proper torque. Good luck
