Subject: 1997-1999 4x4 steering question?
IP: Logged

Message:
Just wondering i have a 1997 3.9V6 5 speed 4x4 and the thing has had loose steering since i got her. I've looked through the whole system and fixed a few things but still its got about an inch of free play in the steering wheel. Im wondering do these old 4x4 dakota's with steering boxs normally have this free play in the wheel? I would think they should be tight just wondering about your guys trucks
Is this normal?

If it's not a rack steering system and has the
tried and true gear box, there is a jam nut you
can loosen up and (most all of em) a screw driver
slot you can turn down and tighten the jam nut and
*most* times the free play is gone.

Before you adjust it turn the steering wheel all the way left and then right. check for play at both places. If none, you can not adjust or the steering will be tight at full or even part turn. if there is less play, you can adjust it that amount only.
