Subject: how to remove a stripped lug IP: Logged
Message: I finally got around to installing new reflex shocks on the front of my 02 QC 4x4.
The passenger side went fine, no issues. The driver side however was a bit of a pain. one of the lug's stripped when I tried to remove it.
The short of the story, I used my craftsman bolt out (first time I've used them since I bought them last christmas on sale).
The problem with the craftsman bolt outs is that the center is a circular hole, you can not put your socket ratchet straight into it. I had to buy a 1 1/6" socket to fit over the bolt out and use my 1/2" socket ratchet. Luckily my local advance did have the 1 1/6" socket in stock. It was around $8 I think.
After trying unsuccessfully by hand, I stood up and stood on the ratchet to get it to loosen the lug. stripped lug removed, i replaced the drivers side shock with no problems. I purchased 6 new lugs for the drivers side (all advance had). They were $1.18 each.
I had to lock the lug in my vice to remove it from my bolt out.
My truck now has 6 new lugs and 2 new shocks on the front. coming soon, the back 2 shocks, I hope the lugs don't strip, but if they do, I know I have the tools to take care of the problem.
on a side note, I dont know about the quality, but the guy at advance did point out they carry the irwin bolt outs, those have the 1/2" ratchet opening in the center so you don't need a larger socket to fit over it.

Message: Aren't lugs typically pressed in without threads. I had this happen on a Maxima and I just used a big hammer to pound it out. And then pressed it in by putting the lug nut back on with a long pipe and breaker bar.

Message: Go to your local bike shop and buy a tube of TiPrep. (Titanium Grease) Use it on the threads and you'll never have this problem again.

Message: Might sound stupid, but works...Rotate your tires more frequent.
Really, though work the lug back and forth if its tight coming off, may take a few times but it works. spray em with your choice of spray lub, and use the above note.

Message: Well, actually. I replaced the brake pads on that side too when my caliper on the passenger side (no problems replacing shock on that side) locked up. That was a month or so ago.

Message: I agree with problem Child. I rotate twice a year; as I change to a different set of winter tires. If it was crappy lugs, I guess I would have worn mine out by now - but 2 years older than yours, and mine are still fine. A bit of anti-seize helps.

Message: the bolt itself? or the lug nut
when something is stuck for me usually i jsut weld a long piece of steel to it and then turn it off with that
you get the added bonus of the weld will heat up the part and that helps break any corrosion or if there happens to be lock-tite on it
