Subject: On buying a used vehicle IP: Logged
Message: I would put this in the off topic, but it's full of @#$#$%.
I've been in the market looking for a used 4x4 for some months now. Basically I'm looking for a V6 that I can beat the snot out of and not worry about dents, dings, scratches, etc. I've found a ton of vehicles in my price range but they are all crap.
some have super high mileage (200k+) for the price (should be much lower even to be top-of-the-line pristine condition with kbb/edmunds blue book value).
Some are in horrible shape physically (rust holes, missing fenders/bumpers/doors/quarter panels).
Many have "needs engine" or "needs transmission" and are still priced high. or "transmission slips some but is not bad yet". Like it's going to fix itself!
Many have no heat and/or no a/c and they are listed as "everything works" or "just needs some freon". One guy I called this weekend about a vehicle told me someone test drove it and the a/c worked when she got in and didn't work when she got out, but it just needed some freon. WTF? "freon" isn't gonna just leak out that quickly. And, he refuses to come down in the price any. Gee no wonder they didn't buy it, cause it's going to cost $500-$1000 to fix (i'm sure alot of people are looking for cars for daily drivers for themselves or their kids and not mechanically inclined to fix stuff themselves).
One guy would not come down any on price when i called last weekend and this weekend the price is listed at $300 less.
Another one I saw the guy said it was "fuel injected" and had 5400 miles on new engine. I show up to look at it and it's got a carb and 54,000 miles since the engine was installed (used engine, not rebuilt or remanufactured).
Why can't people be honest about this stuff when you call? I've wasted a lot of time looking at crap.
I was hoping to have something before 2nd week of November. I'm going to a buddy's cabin in the mountains and was looking forward to doing some exploring (logging roads that are not very well maintained and have a lot of brush and crap to scratch up a paint job.

Message: I always wonder about those "just needs" things people tell you about. If it "just needs" some freon, why not "Just add it" so everything works the way it should? I buy old VWs on occasion, and I love it when they guy tells me that it "just needs a tune-up and it will run". Well, tune it up and sell it as a runner for $500 more! Things like that are definitely red flags!
Unfortunately, if all the vehicles in your price range are garbage, the best choice might be to up your price range. This is also the case with old VWs - spend the money now for a nice car or spend it over time fixing all the problems.
Good luck in your search.

Message: I know what you mean. I've been asking myself that. Especially when the A/C is out. It's finally starting to get cool in GA so I think most people don't want to spend the money to fix it because it's "not needed" this time of year, yet, low and behold, it's used for defrost which is needed this time of year.
Considering how the search is going, I think I'm going to just save that cash and use it for the rancho 3" suspension lift for my 02 QC 4x4. I'll need a better daily driver, so I'm thinking of buying a new Charger. Who cares how many miles I put on it, it'll have lifetime warranty :)
