Subject: Bad Pinion Seal IP: Logged
Message: Guy's: Noticed oil leaking from my rear diff so I took it to Pep Boy's thinking the cover was leaking. Well they tell me I need to go to the dealer or Tranny shop because the pinion seal is leaking. I changed the diff oil at 36K and again at 65K. Is this a major expense?

Message: Generally speaking the seal is not that much, however its usually not just a bad seal. Usually its because the crush sleeve gets damaged or worn and allows slop to to build in the pinion damaging the seal. As a general rule I always replace the crush sleeve where applicable, when the retaining nut for the yoak has been removed, because this is what sets and maintain proper preload. However there are a lot of people out there who have successfully replaced just the seal.

Message: Job turned out to be $200 with labor being $145 of that. Overall, less than what I expected. Seems you can't have a dealer touch your truck for under a grand these days.
