From what I've heared aside from decreasing preformance, they also cause your engine to ping.

HAD MY DAKOTA TUNED UP AT 35000 MILES ON MY V-6. AND ABOUT 45000 IT STARTED TO LOSE PREFORMANCE. IN FACT WHEN I CLIMB HILLS ON THE HIGHWAY AT 55 OR 75. IT WOULD DIE. I FOUND OUT WHEN I TOOK OUT THE OLD PLUGS, THAT THE DEALER INSTALLED WERE CHAMPIONS, AND HAD FOWLED. I WAS TOLD BY A DODGE MECHANIC TO USE PLATIUM PLUGS OR A HOTTER PLUG.

I just removed the Bosch Platinums in favor of Autolite 3923s, now my V8 doesn't ping. 3923s are one heat range colder so the plug is not as hot and does not pre-ignite the mixture (ping).

What gap do you set on the 3923s for a 4.7L?

The gap required from the factory. (If you're running an aftermarket ignition, about .050" more)

The reason platinums are not so good in Magnums engines is the pre-ignition caused by the heat retained in the ceramic insulator that protudes around the miniscule platinum (worth more than gold, how much do you think they actually use?) The 3923s are a regular plug, one heat range colder (less ceramic to retain heat). Bernd got me hooked on these plugs, .99 cents each, vs a $4.00 Platinum. Look at www.howstuffworks.com for a good explanation on this, helped me understand the heat range thing better.
