Subject: 02 Transmission filter change IP: Logged
Message: Tonight I changed the filter on my 4wd 2002 Dakota. This is the one with the spin on filter.
2 Questions.
When I took the pan off, there was no pan gasket, only black silicon. Did this come like the factory like this, or has some ole boy changed the fluid before I bought the truck?
And, The dealer told me 5 to 6 Quarts of ATF4. I put in 6 and it was pretty high on the dipstick after I ran it and checked it in neutral (on level ground). Is 6 the standard amount for a fluid/filter change?

Message: There is no gasket. Black silicon is the thing.
In your auto transmission, the cooling loop is not part of the fluid flow system until the transmission is up to operating temperature. After you've had it on the road a bit, the level may go down for this reason. Keep an eye on the level for a coupla days to make sure the level stays correct.

Message: You must be talking about a 44RE tranny. I've got an 02 with a 42RE and it has a reusable rubber pan gasket.

Message: I find it hard to believe there wasn't a gasket on your pan someone has been in there besides yourself ?? All the ones I've done maintenance had a reuseable gasket or new cork gasket and filter, thats a first I've heard of just black silicone

Message: Any idea on what the book calls for on how many quarts of ATF4 on just a filter change?
I bought the truck used at 50,000 miles, has 98,000 on it now.

Message: My 2000 Dakota 2WD came with no gasket on the trans pan, only RTV. I just replace it with new RTV when I put it back together, following the instructions on the tube (let it set for 24 hours or something like that). It never leaks a drop.
My trans has two filters - the spin-on one and the big flat type. I replace both at each service.
I have also found that 6 quarts is the proper amount of fluid, same as the engine (4.7l).

Message: Like Dan saying be sure to use ATF+4 trans fluid and if your have 46RE trans should only hold 4 qts. if only changing the fluid in the pan only.Your glovebox should give you ID tag unless missing will tell you what transmisson you have and if it does right it down and give a good trans. shop and tell them the trans you have and should give the proper required amount for your trans.Don't overfill or underfill may cause problems you don't want later

Message: A Dodge dealer parts salesman told me 5 to 6 quarts, I have seen people say 7 quarts on here, now I get told 4 quarts.
I have put 7 in mine, and it's still low on the dipstick with the truck idling on level ground in neutral and the trans hot (been drivin over 15 miles).

Message: I bought a boat, an 357 sr-1 and are trying to restore it.
I spun a bearing in the starboard engine last year when i got my golf club stuck in the motor and it riped up the crankshast, only got a few runs before it let go.
The feds are after me for identity theft i comited against a Donald Urquhart jr. and for harassing his son Matt. Ive been trying to tell the investagator off but as long as i keep lying about things he is on my tail. Im still going to stick to my made up stories i cant change it now.
Anyway, The place the old owners had the engine built hacked it together trying to pry on edelbrock headers with my 3 iron and the club fell down in the engine and I tried to start the engine anyway. big mistake.
I just got it back on the water and have not pushed it to hard yet. So I dont know my top speed yet that will have to wait till next year, but next year is 2008, the year i might have to go to trial for my crime and thay will probably comit me to the state hospital by court order lets pray thay dont do thaet to me agin.

Message: bigcman - "'02 transmission" doesn't identify any particular transmission. The tranny behind the 4.7 comes with a reusable gasket, but we have no idea what you have. When someone says 5 to 6 quarts, you should always check the stick before putting in 6 quarts.
