Message: When I stopped in my driveway and got out of the truck I smelled something burning. I checked the passenger side and smoke was rolling off of my front tire. By the time I got the stupid scissor jack out (my craftsman 3T rolling floor jack is broke and sears won't fix it - currently battling sears over that one) and jacked up the truck and removed the tire, the smoke had stopped. The lugs were too hot to touch. I checked the rotor temp with my infrared thermometer - it was a cool 195 (this was a good 30-45 minutes after I stopped the truck.
smokin!
I replaced the caliper and brake pads (pads looked almost new, i have 40k miles on them), dealer must have replace them when I bought the truck almost 2 years ago.
$90 in parts, a few hours and I'm driving again.
can't wait for the sears service center manager to call me in the next 2 business days (or so sears corporate out of chicago says). not only has this been ongoing issue for 2 weeks, when I really needed the jack, I couldn't use it.
helped a buddy replace pads on his 03 dakota quad cab 4x4 today as well.
2 guys, 2 dakotas, more than 2 beers :D it was a good saturday afternoon.

Message: Hope you changed or resurfaced the rotor with the new pads and caliper, and did both sides. If not, expect trouble.

Message: did not change or resurface.
I checked the rotor thickness, it was consistent. the surfaces were smooth. The rotor was not glowing hot. Why should i change or resurface?
the pads were almost brand new, they were almost as thick as the new ones I bought. Maybe the dealer replaced them jan 06 when I bought the truck?
Funny thing is this happened on my old 95 dakota, The front right caliper locked on it as well. Same with my current 02.

Message: Dan, the thing you may not have checked is runout, to see if the rotor is warped. The braking surfaces must not only be smooth and flat, but in the same plane.

Message: Wouldn't that be evident with a straight edge? Inside rotor to outside rotor and across the rotor surface(through middle)in a circling motion (from 12 to 6, 11 to 5, 10 to 4, etc) all the way around?

Message: These brake on our trucks and other mopars I've seen sticking or froze up calipers in my yrs as being mechanic my current 02' right side was hanging up around 65,000 or so swap them out and rotors are sh!t to, not having anymore issues now.My old mans 00' Durango brakes last 1st set and rotors just over 30,000 miles and found his right caliper to hang up to and rotors were sh!t to change out and good now as well sounds like silent bomb waiting for us to experience sometimes to late ...
