Subject: Drive Line Vibration IP: Logged
Message: Test drove my used 2004 Dakota Sport w/24K and rough off road tires & didn't detect the drive line vibration at 40 to 45 mph. With a new set of tires vibration was severe. Dealer replaced D.L. with new factory D.L.-better, but not eliminated. I had D.L. balanced-no improvement. Rotating d.l. on pinion flange changes the severity of vibration but does not eliminate it. After 5 or 6 trips to the dealer they are trying to tell me that a little vibration at 40 to 45 mph is natural. Has anyone had any experience with this problem? Below 38 and above 45 mph it is smooth & quiet but at 42 rumble in cab is very annoying.

Message: Just used a Dial Indicator to check for run-out. Found that just in front of hanger bearing, on the short shaft.o18 run-out. Is this enough to cause my problem? Vibration seems concentrated on bearing crossmember.

Message: I know that it depends on how big it is, but for me 18 thousandths worth of runout is pretty bad. What kind of truck do you have. I might have a spare DL.

Message: If you need an abreviation for drive shaft, maybe you guys should try something like DS ? Drive line means much more. Did you try rebalancing the tires ? Is it possible that the knobbier tires were masking the vibration ? Since you said it was severe, I'd assume no, so maybe you should concentrate more on the tires that were changed, rather than suspecting something else.
