Hello,

I have a 2000 Dakota w/3.9L engine. For the past few months the truck has been starting sluggishly. By that I mean it takes 12-15 - sometimes more - before it will start. This happens when the engine is cold. When the engine is warm, it starts fine, 2-3 cranks. I have been told several things to try, i.e., replace the 02 sensor, but I thought I would first try this forum before investing in the wrong parts. Does anyone have an idea what may cause this, and, or, have had the same problem? Any insight will be greatly appreciated.

Also, I just changed the battery today and it started right up after sitting all night. Surely thais cannot be the only problem, can it?

Thanks in advance,
TRE

Sounds like you fixed it. Maybe a good tune up, sensor changes depending on how many miles, and a all fluid change, you'll be running like new.

A battery doesn't last forever, and hey, if that was a factory battery that you replaced, it's at least 8 years old. You can't complain about that.

yep, that was probably it. a weak battery will start the truck but sometines cause a rough idle for a few seconds at a cold start.

Thanks for all the replies. Unfortunaely, I jumped the gun. After the first time, it still takes a lot of cranking to start when cold?

Problem Child, what sensors would you be referring to? I had a tune up - plugs only, about 15,000 miles ago.

Thanks again!!!
