Message: For guys with this set up please try this. With
truck running or not put gear shift in neutral.
engage the clutch , fast! hold it there,
disengage fast! do you hear a clunk? If not do
it at a stop light after the truck has been in
gear. My truck clunks and the dealer says they
cant find anything wrong. This was at 4000km,
it is now at 10000km and it still makes this
noise. Any suggestions.? Throwout bearing?
linkage? what?

Message: TEAMFAST,
My truck does the same thing!!! If I shift from 1st to 2nd, the second I push the clutch in, it will "clunk." I just purchased the truck and have 500 miles on it. The dealer is saying that I have to let it "Break in." Deep down inside, I'm thinking it might be that the clutch plate is messed up. Let me know if you find out anything else about this. Anybody else having this problem?

Message: Mine does it too but it did it far less at 60,000 KM than it does now that it's closing on 100,000. I bought the truck used at 57,000 KM I find it happens more after the truck heats up. which is getting to be less of a problem now that the fall is cooling things down.
next time I take it in for service I'll ask them to have a look at the joints.
Thanks group!

Message: It almost, for the most part, seems as if it would be rear u-joints. I had mine recently replaced and it still clunks slightly when I put it in gear and when it shifts from 1-2 in parking lots and such. But, I have the auto. I thought it was the torque convert or maybe something in the tranny still wanting to put power to the wheels, but I really don't know. It is very annoying. Just food for thought.

Message: It is your rear end that is making the clunk. They set the gears more loose for the manual tranny trucks. It is supposed to make it more drivable. They all do it.

Message: The original appender said that the engine NEED NOT BE RUNNING to hear this 'clunk' It is only the action of moving the clutch pedal that causes the 'clunk'.
Hard to beleive this is a u-joint or the rear axle backlash.

Message: Exactly, its not only when changing gears, but
at idle and when in neutral, running or not. If
you ease the clutch in or out, the sound cannot
be heard, its during fast throwout or fast
engagement.

Message: Okay 2 things... When im going from 1st to 2nd real fast moving I sometimes get a tug like fealing on the rear end... I wonder how much abuse the u-joints will take.
When in nutral clutch in and out all day long not a noise..
How ever if I slam my gear shifter into various gears without using the clutch I get a real wierd noise... lol just kidding...
I did read somewhere that it was not possible to go from 50mph to reverse. The tranny actually wont do it. Thats good to know...

One word of warning... somting to remember.
I have a friend who has been a mechanic for over 20 years. Of-course, I consulted him before purchasing my Dakota with 5-sp tranny.
Apparently, in VERY cold weather, the seals within the clutch slave cylinder on Dodges tend to fail. My buddy said that the Dodge trucks come in to the shop frequently in VERY cold ambient tempertures.
His suggestion to reduce the chance of this occouring was to gently depress/release the clutch several times before driving in VERY cold temps.

Message: I have a 2001 V-6 Dakota Reg Cab w/5spd. It has 10k miles and has the same metallic clunking sound when the clutch is engaged. I took it in and was told that it was the clutch engaging. To me, it feels like the sound is from the u-joint. Also, if I'm driving really slow (5..10 mph) and I step on the clutch pedal really fast, the whole drivetrain shakes. I thinking that something is loose like the motor mounts.

Message: All you are hearing is the play being taken up when the clutch is disengaged.
I also have a problem. When in 1st or second starting or decel i somtimes hear a vibrating sound. Its like a barring spining with a vibration. It only happens when my foot is up on the clutch at a certan position. I think its the through out bearing. Any input. It puts a sharp vibration up the shifter as well. Sounds like crap.
Also if this is what you think it is. How long does it take to totally break or will it just get worse and 2 years from now i have to fix it.

Message: I've been told that it's the clutch actuator linkage. Which makes sense to me. I've got 19000 on my 2000 Dakota. It only seems to do it in neutral though...
I figure if there was something wrong with the clutch, it wouldn't have lasted 19000 miles, eh?

Message: I have a 99 4X4 V8 5spd thats been clunking ever since I've owned it. 1st to 2nd / 2nd to 3rd shifts and pushing the clutch in fast. This has been the most annoying part of this truck (or maybe the pinging). My last truck was a Toyota and was the smoothest shifting vehicle you can imagine, never even the faintest sound of a clunk. If I knew about this clunking before ordering my truck I would definitely got the automatic or a different truck.

Message: I tried it on my '02 and I heard a slight click like something was engaging or going to a rest position. Nothing that I wouldn't expect. The engine was running so it could've been the input shaft's inertia getting upto speed. (it usually only really did it the first time coming from a stop)

Message: My truck does the same thing. I noticed that it happens when I'm first gear and I'm slowing down. If I press the clutch in really fast it will clunk and then someting shakes in the transmission. It sounds like somethings lose. It seems like it happens only when the wheels are driving the transmission, I've never had it happen any other time.

Message: Maybe it is the pedal hitting the stop under the dash, if they have a stop? Or the clutch plates smashing together being you let the clutch out quickly, the shaking is probabily the clutch jumping a bit like it does when you let the clutch out too quickly in a gear.

2002 Dodge Dakota Sport, 3.9 Liter V6, 5spd Transmission
360 Miles (New) began making noise at 125 miles on odometer.
Problem:
Transmission Noise (Clunk) – Sounds like gears are mashing together, a loud “clunk”. Similar to excessive lash between Input shaft and Counter Shaft or “play” between Clutch and Input Shaft Splines.
Occurs when:
1- Starting truck, clutch engaged, when clutch is released (in neutral) and the input shaft engages, a loud gear mash (Clunk) occurs.
2- During fast acceleration (merging with highway traffic) when clutch is engaged and first gear syncro is disengaged, input shaft is free to spin, “Clunks” between first and second gear
3- During fast acceleration in higher gears, not as loud, when syncro’s are disengaged.
Can reproduce “Clunk” or “Mashing” by:
1- Depressing clutch,
2- Placing Trans in first, keeping clutch engaged,
3- Removing from first gear,
4- Releasing clutch to engage input shaft.
5- Does not reoccur at idle unless gears are engaged and disengaged
Can prevent “Clunk” or “Mashing” by:
1- Releasing clutch slowly during idle
2- Shifting slowly or “holding” clutch between 1st and second gear

Message: Well guys, the clunk in the 5 speed is normal. I have the '02 4.7L 5 speed and it 'Clunks' when shifting between 1st and 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. I am very sensitive to the sounds my truck makes and find this very anoying, but have learned to live with it (and always happens when my wife drives it UUUHH). Mine is all rearend, and is from the looseness of the rear. I have driven heavy duty trucks for years and have adjusted to this sound. (it's just more in your ear in a small P/U truck compaired to a semi tractor trailor) I generally do not use the clutch after take off, and during these shifts I don't get the rearend clunk. (I guess thats the diffence between professionals and weekenders) I only use the clutch when under hard exceleration, when I need to move rapidly between gears.
On the 'fast clutch depression and release', that is the surfacess of the clutch slapping together. This is common when 2 hard objects are slammed together via large springs.
Good Luck,
MyVW Killer Lynn
