Subject: 4.10 vs 4.56 & other random questions IP: Logged
Message: I recently put a 3 inch body lift on my 97 ex-cab 5.2 5-sp manual 4x4. I put on a set of 33x12.50 BFG TA All-Terrains and I'm really frusterated at how slow the truck has become. The stock rear end is a 3.5, which explains the slowness. I've been looking at this chart...http://www.motivegear.com/tech_info/ratio.html and have been trying to decide between 4.10 or 4.56 ratios. 4.56 seems much lower than stock, but the chart says it would be the best. I don't do much freeway driving, but usually drive about 60-65 around my town which has many hills. I don't want it to hurt my gas milege too much, but I would love to have that V8 power back. So, 4.10 or 4.56? Also, while have the differential appart I would like to put a locker in. How well does the Powertrax system work? Should I spring for he Detroit Locker? I drive 90% on road, but I would like the locker for the snow and for off-roading. Last question... I have K&N intake and Magnaflow exhaust, but for the towing I do, it really isn't enough. I'm very slowly loosing compression on two cylinders and plan on rebuilding the engine next spring. I would like to put in a 360 block or stroke my 318, but don't know if my NV3500 will be able to handle the power. I don't plan on racing it often, but having a tranny that will hold up to full throttle acceleration is pretty important. What would be more cost/power affective? The 360 or stroked 318? Thanks to everyone who answers and sorry for the long post.

Message: ok as for the gears. 4.10 you will gain a lot of power back and 4.56 you will get more low end but gas might drop a little. if your looking for more power then go with the 4.56. if you do 90 % on road driving i would advise NOT to get the detroit locker. for what your looking for is probobly a lsd in the rear. i got one, and off road and snow i could not complain. locker is more for hard core off roaders. as for the engines. the 360 is just a bored and stroked 318 so i would just go with a 360. i plan on doing the same myself. i also got a 318. good luck

Message: Does anyone make 4.27 gears? Also, does my truck have the 27 or 29 spline rear end? What front differential does it have? Now, I was pretty sure about the Detroit locker being over kill, but does the Powertrax have any major cons that would bad for my situation? When I do go off-roading I do many hill climbs and find a lot of mud and slippery goop, so I think I could use the full locker. I wouldn't mind a little noise when turning, but tire wear would be an issue since my last set just ran me $712 OTD! Thanks for all your help. I've just had all these questions stored up for a while and just decided to ask them all at once.

Message: I would go with a 4.56 gear. It won't affect your mileage that much, and you'll be a lot happier with the results. Those big heavy tires take some effort to get moving.
Have you done a brake upgrade yet? Those same big heavy tires take some effort to get stopped, too.
As for the rear diff, the stock LSD work quite well on the street in most situations. If you want a little more, I'd use the Detroit Gear EZ locker. It's something the average guy can install in the garage, relativly inexpensive, and (by all reports) a good improvement over stock.
The front diff is a little more difficult. A detroit TruTrack will work, but I don't know if one's available for us. I use one in the rear of my track car, and I love it.
The ELocker also gets excellent reviews, and is stock equipment on some GM trucks. Again, not sure of availability for us.

I'm not a big fan of the old fashioned Detroit Locker. In the snow and on rain slick roads, it can be a handfull. Great for fair weather and drag strip cars, though.

Message: I went to 4.10 with 31s, wouldn't hesitate to use 4.56 if turning 33s. An Auburn limited slip is working very well for me.

Message: I was running 4.56 with my 29.5" tall tures. I loved it but slightly reved at 80MPH or so on the freeway. On the recent tire change I went to 31" tall tires and it is just right for all around driving. On 33" tall tires it's a no brainer. 4.56 gears all the way. You WILL notice more power from a dead stop. Freeway 65MPH will be nothing to worry about at all with 33's!

Message: i did the same setup in my jeep 33x12.5s. i went with 456s and went with a ratchet locker i nthe rear. im VERY happy with it. has lots of power and cruises great at 65 "besides the driveshaft vibes"
.bob had about everytihng right. i wouldnt lock the front cause it could slide alot more in the snow than you want. the ratchet locker is pretty loud but it works great. i went with an aussie. it was like 150 bucks. check ebay they have good deals on new ones.
the front axle is a dana 30 "also like my jeep" im pretty sure. idk about the spline count. i wouldnt get a full locker with those axles. there not that strong with 33s
get a 360 motor and build it then when its done you just swap it in. then you wont have your truck down as long. thats what im doin with my jeep. its gettin a stroker motor.

Message: Wow, lots of replies. OK, I'm still a little unsure about the gears. The power of the 4.56 sounds great, but I don't want to be spinning much more than 2500RPM on the freeway. I usually drive about 70 when I do go on the freeway (Probably about 4 hours total/month average). Does anyone have a equation where I could figure out what RPM my engine would be spinning at 70mph? Also, I just don't know if I'll really need the 4.56 gears if I throw in a 360 with mild performance mods. Ok, about the locker/lsd I'm really still undecided. I figured that I wouldn't want the Powertrax no-slip especially because my truck is a stick. There are just too many mixed reviews for me to take a $400 chance. Now, the Auburn LSD looks great, yet I'm a little scared to spend that kind of money just to upgrade when I already have an LSD. Mine is probaly shot, but it still works a little bit. Are there any other options? Does the Detroit EZ gear locker fit in the 8.25? Or are there any other options that fit on the 9.25, because I could always get a working 9.25 from a junk yard. Also, I'm so excited about the 360. My second gear syncro is going bad quickly, so I need to rebuild what in necessary in my tranny. Is there any way I could get heavy duty gears to put in that are tougher to handle more power while I have it appart? Thanks again for your help.

Message: Oh, also while I have my own thread. My interior lights that go on when your have your lights on are out. I have no dash lights whatsoever in the dark except for those that are always on like the shift light, clock, and my ABS light which happens to always be on too. Where should I start looking to find the problem?

Message: With the manual transmission (.73:1 OD), 4.56 gears and if the tires are a true 33" diameter, your RPM's will be as follows:
65 MPH - 2,205 RPM
70 MPH - 2,375 RPM
75 MPH - 2,544 RPM
80 MPH - 2,714 RPM
Same setup with 4.10's
65 MPH - 1,983 RPM
70 MPH - 2,135 RPM
75 MPH - 2,288 RPM
80 MPH - 2,440 RPM

Message: OK, I've decided I'm going to use 4.56 gears thanks to all your persuasivness. Now, I've also decided to go with LSD. The correct locker would eiter be too expensive or just not what I'm looking for. So, I found a site where I can get the Auburn for $345 and I can get a Detroit Truetrac for $465. Are there any advantages to either one? Is the Detroit worth the extra money? I imagine it would be more reliable without clutch packs, but I don't know. It doesn't seem like many people have the Detroit. If anyone has it can they tell me what they think of it?
