Subject: 98 dakota, pls help

I am at my wits end, please help. I am having an intermittent problem with my 98 dakota 4x4 club cab 318. I started almost a year ago and no dealership has been able to help me. The truck runs great most of the time. On the hiway when I accelerate to pass it misses some times, not very often, this is only slightly annoying. When the truck is cold and I start it and drive for about 1 city block the truck misses terribly, this happens about one in ten times which is quite annoying. Every so often, about oneca a week, the truck dies while driving. The truck will not re-start right away. If I leave it for about 10 min it fire right up. I thought if I towed it to a dealership as soon as it dies they may be able to find the problem, not so it starts right up at the dealership. They say there is nothing wrong and the truck runs perfectly for them.

I have replaced the following to try and narrow the problem down. Ignition coil, cap, rotor, plugs and wires.

I am not sure what to do next. Could it be the fuel pump? or the in tank filter being plugged up? Should I replace the fuel pump and filter?

Any advise is greatly appreciated.

Thank You
Darren

It sounds like a fuel pump problem and/or fuel screen. My 97 did it to me only once but it re-started after about 10 minutes and thankfully hasn't happened again.
Good Luck

Hey Darren,
I had a similar problem, it would quit like I turned the ignition off. It wouldn't restart til I opened the hood to look at it, needed some attention like a woman, and it would just piss me off.

I built a '68 318 and put it in an '88 Jeep Comanche. It was tight but it fit. I didn't want to cut the hood but it held too much heat.

The problem turned out to be the magnetic pick up in the distributor. It got so hot one night that it burned one of the wires inside and would cut the circuit when it got hot.

The only thing is, cold it would run ok.

im going threw the same problem right now with my 1998 3.9L dakota sport. the thing that seperates mine from yours is that mine acts like the distributor is wet only in the mornings. i got to let run for 30 min. before i drive anywhere. if i don't do this my truck tries to act like a "mechnical bull" (jumping and lunging all over the road)and then it just dies and won't run after that for around 5 to 10 min. lately, it's been throwing another curveball at me. it wants to act like it's going to over heat and then dosn't. it can be sitting in the driveway all day i can jump in and take off. won't even to the end of my road it goes from 0 degrees to 280 degrees in nothing flat. i've got to shut it off for a min. or so and it's fine???? it's becoming more matance then my wife. LOL. i use to sweet talk to it and it would quit, but even that's not helping anymore?? don't laugh, we've all done once or twice in our life. so, any info would greatly help.

Darren, that really sounds like a fuel pump to me. See if that is running when it dies and will not restart. If you turn your key slowly JUST before you are about to make the starter go, you may be able to hear the fuel pump kick in if it is working...if your truck then dies, try to see if you can hear the fuel pump when it refuses to start, then you will know without taking it out, but it sure sounds like it to me.
Josh, you sound like a stuck thermostat or a bad sending unit and that will drive your computer crazy.
Both of you, have you checked to see if you have any codes coming up?
I have a 98 5.2 also.

Josh, I do not know what year your Dak is but you access the codes via the odometer on my 98, make sure you are checking properly for codes, I would be surprised if you are not getting some error readings in there somewhere.
Keep us informed when you find out.

Thanks for the tips guys. My truck has never shown any error codes, thats why I don't think it is the O2 sensor or other sensors acting up. I thought I heard the fule pump last time it wouldn't start but I am not sure. I will be gone for a week but when I get back I will take the tank off and take a look see. I hope it is a pluged fuel screen?

Thanks
Darren

I would doubt that it is a clogged screen, but please keep us up to date as you find out what the problem is.

Hi guys. I have not yet removed my fuel tank but did realize something. My truck only seems to have problems when the tank is full. Could this be a problem with the vapor can as Snowman has said? If so can the vapor can (near the tank) and valve (under the hood) be removed? That way I would know if they were causing the problem and could then replace them. I don't want to replace things that are not necessary.

Thanks
Darren

I cannot see how the vapor can could tell if you had a full tank of gas. Still sounds like a fuel pump to me or maybe the electrical connections for the fuel pump.

Rascal, how do you check the codes on your '98? I haven't tried anything on mine, but a friend of mine did on his '98 and it just checked the guages when he held the reset down. It was my understanding this only worked on the '97's. Please elaborate.

I copied this from a previous post, it looks like the right way but I cannot promise it works on the 98, there seems to be some dispute to it, give it a try, its free and will not hurt a thing. If this does not get your error codes, then it will take a code scanner to do it.

here you go,

Roll your key from off to on (don't crank it) three times rapidly. Leave it on the third time, and your odometer window will flash the code numbers that are stored. To clear them, reset the pcm by unhooking the battery, then holding the key to on for 15 sec. You will have to reset your radio and whatnot.

Let us know how it goes..

Not sure if this works or not. I wasn't expecting any codes and it didn't show me any. But it did switch the display from trip to odometer, and left it there. Thanks Rascal.

So you did the "3 times on and off" and it gave you no codes? Did it give you a "55" , (no codes)?
On my 98, I just press the reset stem at the odometer to switch between odometer and trip odometer, is yours not this way too?
