Subject: Starter or ground problem?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello everyone,

Here's the history. About a month and a half ago, I turned the key to start my 3.9L 2000 Dakota and everything went dark--no starter, no lights, no nothing. I fiddled around with the battery connections a bit and when I got to the negative cable the power came back. Started the truck with no problems then and for several weeks. In the past two weeks, same problem. Turn the key, no power, fiddle with the negative and power returns. Last week, a spark from the negative when I turned the key.

So this must be a ground problem. I first had the battery tested--no problem with it. I pulled the power cables, looked for any problems and re-attached. Started fine. This morning, something new: Turned the key, lot of clicking from the starter and had lights, etc., but the starter doesn't turn over after a few tries. Now I'm thinking it may be a starter problem. But I was able to move the negative cable and I was able to start the truck. I looked close at all the points where the truck is grounded. I did see a possible culprit near the alternator. The insulation had split and I noticed green powder around the connection.

Sorry for the long post, folks, but do you think I have a ground problem or a starter problem?

A PS LOL.......If there is green in the wires, either cut the end off past the green. Use bacan soda with hot water in an empty gal milk jug. Us 1/3 to 1/2 box of bacon soda to a gallon.

Thanks for the reply OB...Question: would an auto parts store carry the rather large connector that the wire is crimped onto?

Yup, and soldering it would eliminate the potential for corrosion to disrupt continuity.

Lead, follow, or get out of the way
