Subject: Help Over-torqued Lower Ball Joint
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello,

I am new to the forum and wonder if someone can give me some advice. I have a 98 Dakota SLT 4x4 3.9L and just replaced all the ball joints. I over-torqued one of the lower ball joints, by mis reading the specs, Torqued it to 135, should have been 90. Now the rubber boot looks like it is crushed a bit and is not seating properly. My question is, do you think I can just replace the ball joint or do you think I also damaged the hub?

Thanks,
Dave

Well, you should at least replace the ball joint. after that much over-torque, the threaded part is probably stretched beyond factory tolerance, and may not safely take 90 lb/ft any more.

As for the hub. It's cast iron. Don't know how resistant it is to taper hole expansion, and would very carefully compare hole diameters with the other side's hub.
