Subject: Truck quit while driving

I was driving to work today when my engine shut off as I was drivimg down the road. I coasted off to the side of the road and attempted to restart in park. The truck tryed to start but would just sputter at around 500 RPM and stall after 15 seconds or so. The truck is in the shop now, but I would like an Idea as to what's going on. My best guess is bad gas (drove around 5 miles since last fill up), clogged fuel filter, or some issue with the fuel pump

Can you give specifics on the truck? year? engine? milage?

I've seen alot of things happen to cause what you said. Everything from EGR/PCV to bad wire splice to fuel filter to fuel pump.

First guess would be fuel supply issue.

the truck is a '97 ext cab 3.9L Auto, 145k miles. I'm curious, if it turns out to be bad gas, is there any recourse I can take, like getting a refund?

check the fuel pressure with a gauge
with 145 on it if the pump was never changed
it would be a good place to start looking

Pour in a can of SeaFoam to help clean up the tank, deal with residual water, etc. Count yourself lucky and don't buy gas there any more.

Good Luck with a refund on the gas, I had that happen to me last summer, Biggest bunch of crap to try and get done, Contact whoever in your state controls the gas ASAP, and have them inspect the station, they will not sample the gas in your tank.

Had the same thing happen to me with my with my 2000 R/T. A couple of years ago I was driving and it just quit. I coasted to the curb and tried to start it. When it did start, it just sputtered and quit. Had it towed to a garage and it was a bad fuel pump. Did not have it repaired at a Chrysler dealer and it was still over $600.00. Good luck.

ps. only had 14K miles, but was out of warranty.

I'm betting on bad gas.ALL STATIONS ACCUMULATE MOISTURE IN THERE STORAGE TANKS.They always have a few inches in the bottom. They pump it out with a foot pump as needed assuming they are a caring station. Mom and pop stations are the worst for this but not all. Buy a couple of cans of isothol or denatured alcohol and dump them both in tank. should take care of it. don;t buy heat.heat prevents`a problem, isothol solves problems.

Don't think it's the most expensive thing automatically though. I
had the same thing happen to my '97 5.2. Turns out the Throttle
Positioning Sensor (TPS) Goes bad after a while. After I replaced
that, the truck ran fine. Just saying, check the small stuff first.
