Subject: Toyota Tundra Test Drive IP: Logged
Message: So on my way back to home saturday I stopped by Bass Pro Shops in Clarksville Indiana just off I 65. I signed up for one of the toyota tundra prove it events to take a test drive in a toyota tundra in the parking lot. Why? because My wife and I both got $15 gift cards to BPS. $30 in free stuff from BPS. That's a lot of fly tying material :D
I test drove the tundra quad cab with 5.7L V8 with tow package including tow/haul mode. My test drive included a trailer with 10,000 lbs of weight (free weights). the tow/haul mode is a "reprogramming" of the transmission if you will.
in driving 15 - 25 mph it was around 2000-3000 RPMs towing the trailer.
I could definately feel the trailer pushing the truck some stopping from that speed. It seemed to tow it quite easily. I'm not certain how the RPM range is in towing something that heavy. Of course, If i were towing 10,000 regularly it would be with a gooseneck and diesel :)
A lot of plastic inside. I was driving, the toyota guy was in the front seat and my wife in the back. She said it was roomy but not as comfortable as my 2002 dakota. she did say it has plenty of leg room.
One thing i love about my dakota is the overhead console with garage remote. Not an option on the tundra.
One thing toyota does have that i like is full size bed available in quad cab.

There is no "quad cab" in a Toyota Tundra.

Message: I just bought a 5.7 RC SB 4wd today. Its a hoss'. Its replacing my 03 4.7, AWD RC which I think is the best handling most verisital truck ever made. I finally broke it pulling my horse trailer three weeks ago. 110k miles of hauling and towing before anything failed. Hard to beat on a truck that size. I'll report back how the Tundra does as a work truck.

Message: Hey deerridge,
What part of your truck broke? If its still fixable, I'd buy it if you are willing to sell it and still have it.
By the way, nice Tundra! I don't need the 4WD but I bet its still fast as hell right?

Message: a friend at work considered the tundra when he was looking for a new vehicle. He wound up narrowing it down to silverado and avalanche. he quickly discounted the ram because of sucky gas milage, nothing more.
he opted for the silverado over the avalanche. He loves his, he gets 25 mpg in his Z71 quad cab 4x4.
his thoughts on the tundra? cheap looking interior and he's not going to tow 10,000 lbs. Of course, they he and his wife decided to do some landacaping .. he towed a bobcat hauling landscape material in the bed with no issues in his new Z71.

Message: I do tow 10000 lbs and the brakes on the Chevy's suck unless you have four wheel disks which is only available on the HD's. The 1500Ram doesn't have the disk brakes either and the payload is way to low for what I do. I also need the shortbed RC to get in and out of my barns so I can't use the HD's, THey're all long beds, ext, Quads, way to long and heavy and unmanuverable. By the way none of them have 381 horsepower with a 4.30 rear end (mine's bigger than yours Logic). That 25mpg sounds a little questionable. My 4000 pound Dak only gets 15 to 16 typically. He must have checked that coasting downhill from the continital divide.

Message: Actually thats not that unlikely I have a 2002 avalanche that gets 20-21 on the highway religiously. My 2004 club cab 4.7 average about 15-16 at best. Here is the funny thing my dad has a 2005 suburban and with the cruise set at 75 mph we got 22-23 going to the beach last year. Milage has never been a strong point in most cases for dodge. Even the fleet trucks at work only average about 11mpg and it doesnt matter if your load or empty. I keep my dakota cause it is a blast to drive, I use it as my daily and the avalanche to travel.

Message: Note that he said 4x4 quad cab, I don't think so. MY Silverado 350 RC with a 3.41 rear end and OD only got 16. Of course it was a 92'.

Message: My Avalanche is 4 door z71 4x4. Ive never got 25 mpg, but then again I also dont have that displacement on demand stuff either. I dunno if that would help on the 1/2 ton or not or not. I know that on the 6.0 engines in our new chevy at work we only gained about 3 miles per gallon which gave us a max of 17 mpg versus the same truck just 2 years older. Dunno Ill have to watch it and see.

Finally... a V8. '01 Dodge Dakota RC, 4.7, 5-speed, 3.92 LSD. = R/T Killer. well at least a stock one

Message: his is brand new 07 and he has gotten 32 mpg on all highway trips ...of course that's not towing / hauling anything and his truck has their fuel management system - 4 cylinders.
if he drives in stop-and-go traffic alot every day he can get as low as 16-18.
his wife has an 07 tahoe, they drove to texas from georgia and got 28 mpg on the highway.
deerridge - how often do you tow 10,000 ? why did you not opt for diesel? too big for the barns?

Message: My typical load with the horse trailer is 6 to 8 thousand. A little over limit for my Dakota. My Flatbed with a load of hay approaches 10 with 110 bales of hay. Go slow and careful in the Dakota. Won't be problem with the Tundra.
Your saying a Quad cab Chevy 4x4 is getting 32MPG? I think they're rated at maybe 18, I'll look.

Message: deerridge - yes, that's what he told me.
according to fueleconomy.gov my 2002 QC dak with 4.7L auto is rated 12/16 i filled up today, got 16.1 combined - had i driven the speedlimit more i'd have gotten better. It's been a long time since i've done a strickly highway trip i know i've hit 19 before.
oh yeah i have fishing gear in the quad cab all the time. I also have a leer fiberglass shell and a tool box with around 200 lbs of tools and stuff in it.
I got 17-18 combined in my old 95 CC 4x4 with 3.9L auto with a soft tonneau. On highway trips i hit 25 mpg before. I wish i had kept it, would have been nice to have 2 daks.
