It's always good to consider many brands when searching for a new vehicle! I agree that the American vehicles should get your first look. I used to be a Toyota snob, but I don't know if I will ever consider another one again. I will let you know in 2010!

I had a '97 Ford Ranger once. Bought it brand new (like I always do). It was a nice truck, but the Check Wallet light kept coming on. I got tired of spending $500+ at the dealer every three months, so I traded it in for a 2000 Dodge Dakota.

I only had the Check Wallet light come on once with the Dodge, and that was for an O2 sensor I was able to replace myself. I also had to go with better brakes and replace the ball joints with ones from Moog. The right front wheel hub has developed play TWICE, requiring replacement. It's easy to replace, just not cheap! The only other problem is the AC needs to be recharged every other year. No one can find a leak, but it loses efficiency.

On the other hand, a friend of mine has a '98 Ford Ranger, and it's been pretty much trouble-free! The MAF sensor went out once, making it run so slow it couldn't be driven (if it would even start). Since cleaning the sensor resulted in a change, we replaced it with a new one. Other than that, I don't think he's had any trouble with the truck in 85,000 miles!

Lee - I replaced the MAF in my wife's old 95 mustang several times.

It would throw MAF or O2 code but it was always MAF. cleaning never did jack for me. good thing it was a relatively inexpensive part and easy to change in a parking lot away from home because inevitably that would be where it was when it went out.

Dan,

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that the Ranger with the bad MAF sensor never threw a code! That was a real downer, since the owner of the truck was the one who put out the money for the code reader a couple years earlier! We have used the code reader to diagnose several cars, but never his! Oh well! Like you said, the part is relatively inexpense and easy to fix. I just didn't have the experience to do the work myself back when I had my Ranger. Live and learn!
